His music and entertainment have had a major impact on popular music and he has received acclaim from critics and musicians alike, particularly for his work in the 1970s and his lasting impact on the music business. One of the most successful songwriting partnerships in history is his collaboration with songwriter Bernie Taupin.
John was born and raised in the London Borough of Pinner. He began playing the piano at an early age and was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where he spent five years studying. In 1962, he founded the blues group Bluesology, but in 1967 he disbanded the group to pursue a solo career. After answering a call for songwriters, John and Taupin met.

Given his longstanding creative and storytelling influence, it is perhaps not surprising that Taupin first balked at Rocketman, a musical quasi-biography that opens Friday and treats important details of John’s life lightly. A little less than two weeks after the film’s Cannes premiere and two days before its US release, Taupin said in an interview in Manhattan on Wednesday: “I questioned the original script, I wasn’t happy with it.”
However, after making a few minor suggestions, Taupin let screenwriter Lee Hall handle the writing while he watched actor Jamie Bell play out his life. Taupin ended up loving the film after seeing it in Cannes and was struck by its dramatic anti-literal flourishes and incredible hyper-precision.
“It’s a wonderful reward for a lot of hard work,” says Taupin. “Right handed [Fletcher, the film’s director]it took it from something that could have been quite cliché and traditional to another level.”

John’s biography is chronicled in Rocketman from his repressed childhood in the dysfunctional Pinner family, through his meteoric rise to fame in the 1970s to his stint in rehab in 1990. The timeless lyrics of songs like “Tiny Dancer” and “Rocket Man” were written by Taupin, who was almost constantly by his side and helped him through his fight against addiction and crisis.
Their paths didn’t cross by chance, however: in 1967, they both answered an ad from Liberty Records looking for songwriters. Taupin and John did not know how to compose melodies. However, the romanticism of Taupin’s writings influenced John when he received an envelope containing them and began recording them. Shortly after hooking up, the two struck up a deep friendship that Taupin described as a “non-sexual love affair”.
“When we started, it was really just him and me,” Taupin recalled. Taupin wrote lyrics in the back bedroom while John arranged his words into melodies in front of the upright piano; they shared bunk beds in John’s mother’s apartment and often needed money. Taupin has described his own lyrical approach as “very much a stream-of-consciousness sort of thing”. He would write what he had in mind and he would turn it into a song.
