Elton John Says Ryan Reynolds Co-Owning Wrexham AFC Is ‘Fantastic’: ‘They’re on the Ride That I Was on’

Elton John is backing Ryan Reynolds’ football journey.

The singer and former football club chairman, 76, said in a new interview with the BBC that it was “fantastic” that Reynolds, 47, had become part owner of Wrexham AFC. “It’s great. I called Ryan when they won and they got the promotion and I think that’s fantastic,” John told the paper, referring to the team’s National League victory in April.

“They’re on the ride I’ve been on,” the music icon – who previously owned Watford Football Club – continued. “It’s a little different because times have changed, but it’s no less exciting. … I bet they’re having more fun with that than any movie they’ve ever made.” Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

The pair bought the United Kingdom football team in November 2020, and in April the club became National League champions, securing a place in England’s Football League Two for the first time in 15 years.

John previously owned Watford FC in the UK under the management of the late former footballer Graham Taylor.

The “Rocketman” singer first bought and became president of the club in 1976, before selling the team in 1990 and buying the club in 1997. John finally stepped down as president in 2002.

John’s latest interview comes after the singer revealed earlier this month that he is releasing new music.

Speaking at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, he said he had completed his new album with his longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin as he delivered a speech inducting Taupin, 73, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“We just finished the album in Los Angeles, which is going to surprise you a lot,” John said in fan-filmed footage from the ceremony.

“It’s absolutely beautiful, and it’s full of youth, and it’s full of vitality. It’s a beautiful place after being together for 56 years,” he teased.

Taupin previously told PEOPLE in September that he and John are “definitely going to make another record.”

“There is no doubt about it. Just because she’s not on tour doesn’t mean she’s fading to black. He will continue to be very active in other areas,” he said.
