Emerson started his youth career with local team Santos Fc when he was 15 years old, from 2009 to 2011. On 17 April 2011, he made his debut for the first team against Paulista in the Campeonato Paulista, replacing Kerrison.
On 21 January 2012, he made his debut as a starter in a 1–1 away draw against XV de Piracicaba. He made his Serie A debut on June 17, 2012 against Flamengo. On 31 August 2015, Emerson joined Roma on a one-year loan and made his debut against Palermo on 4 October 2015. On 14 May 2016, he scored his debut goal in the Italian Serie A after replacing Stephan EI Shaaraway in the winner against Milan. Similarly, his loan was extended for another season, and on December 5, 2016, Roma paid more than $2 million for Emerson.
