Emily in Paris Heartthrob Lucas Bravo Talks Channeling His ‘Dark Side’ to Play a Thief in Freedom (Exclusive)

With his ocean blue eyes and perfectly tousled hair, Lucas Bravo mesmerized countless female fans playing sexy chef Gabriel for four seasons on the highly addictive Netflix hit, Emily in Paris.

One of those viewers: actress and director Mélanie Laurent, who sought out Bravo when she was casting for her true crime film Freedom about dashing French thief Bruna Lusak.

“She said to me, ‘Listen, this character is charming, yes, and you’ve proven you can do it. good for you But now we have to combine it with danger. And you are the danger,'” Bravo, 36, recalls Laurent’s words.

“I thought, ‘Really? Me?’ And yes, we all have a dark side. We all have our traumas and darkness and unresolved issues and she reached in and grabbed them and helped me bring them out. And it was very therapeutic,” he continues.

For Sulak, who died in 1985 at the age of 29, robbing stores “wasn’t even about the money,” explains Bravo, who says the famous thief opposed capitalism.

“It was the 80s, the beginning of big supermarkets, big companies,” he continues. “So he was simpler and all he was doing was creating a different stratosphere to fight this system.”

Before robbing high-end stores like Cartier, Sulak started out with grocery stores, where doe-eyed cashiers were mesmerized as they were robbed. Sulak, after all, insisted on never firing a gun and always being polite to those he held in his hands. Like Bravo, it was also easy on the eyes.

Sulak and his crew “would rob a supermarket and all the cashiers would be questioned afterwards and they would look at the pictures and say, ‘Oh, he was cuter. He was so charming and his eyes.’ And we have transcripts of this, which is crazy,” says Bravo.

Freedom will only serve to raise Bravo’s profile, something the reserved Frenchman — son of professional soccer player Daniel Bravo and singer Eva Bravo — is still getting used to after Emily in Paris made him a world sensation.

“Dad actually sent me a wonderful message the other day because he’s always been a known entity in the family, especially in France and Paris where he played for a long time,” says Bravo. “So I grew up watching my father being recognized, respected and loved.”

“And he texted me: ‘I was at this dinner the other day and someone came up to me and said, ‘Oh, you’re Lucas Bravo’s father.’ And my dad said, ‘I felt so proud in that moment and I had to share it with you.’ It was very sweet.”
