Encanto’s co-director Jared Bush shared the first idea for Camilo’s Bruno transformation in “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”, showing off a much taller character. This animated family musical had a short theatrical run in late November and quickly moved to Disney+ over the Christmas holiday. This hasn’t stopped Encanto from becoming a massive success, as viewers have become enthralled with the magical Madrigal family.
Encanto follows Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz), the only powerless child in a family full of magical characters, as she tries to save the others’ gifts and their family home (Casita). The soundtrack is full of original songs by Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, who was already familiar with Disney through his work on Moana. Every single one of these memorable songs has made its way onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” hitting the number one spot, quickly breaking records and circulating on social media sites.
On Twitter, Bush showed off the original plans for Camilo (Rhenzy Feliz) in “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” Viewers see snippets of Camilo’s shapeshifting abilities throughout the film as he regularly uses his gift to help others, but also takes pleasure in using it for mischief. For his iconic section in “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” Camilo extends his height and alters his appearance to fit this spooky perception of his uncle. However, this version would have seen a much grander Bruno towering over his family as Camillo stretches out to the size of the room. Check out the video below:

Despite its status as a viral hit, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” was left out of Encanto’s three Oscar nominations. While it is now largely considered the musical’s most popular song, Miranda had no idea it was going garner this kind of attention as he submitted his choice before the theatrical release, instead choosing to nominate “Dos Oruguitas.” The songwriter sticks by this decision, stating that he believes it accurately captures the spirit of the film.
After its international success, Disney CEO Bob Chapek referred to Encanto as the start of a franchise, suggesting that this isn’t the end of this magical story. Miranda has also touched on his hopes to continue working with the Madrigal family, potentially in the form of a stage show, making use of some ideas cut from the original script. With this kind of attitude, there’s hope that fans will get to see Camilo’s powers explored more in further Encanto content.
