Eric Stonestreet Reveals Details of Engagement to Fiancée Lindsay Schweitzer: ‘At First She Said No’

Eric Stonestreet talks about the details of his engagement with fiancée Lindsay Schweitzer!

The Modern family alum, 52, joined TODAY with Hoda and Jenna on Friday where he opened up about his wedding planning and revealed how the proposal went down. Stonestreet and Schweitzer got engaged in August 2021 after 5 years of dating.

“I proposed,” he said. “I tricked her pretty well. I convinced her that a company was interested in us working together for an ad campaign. So we did a little test video and I set up the camera in front of her.”

“And then in the middle of it I just pulled out the ring,” he continued. “So everything was filmed. She was in hair and make-up.”

But Stonestreet explained in the interview that her immediate response was not quite what he had hoped for. “At first she said no, and then I persuaded her. It was great. Everything turned out great!”

“We’re not planning a wedding right now; we’re building a house. I think we’ve decided to build a nice house to get married,” the actor told PEOPLE in an interview for the More to Look campaign, for which he’s an ambassador.

“That’s the goal – that our friends can come and enjoy a nice party and a good time,” he added. “You know, I don’t know how often I’ll be bringing all my friends to Kansas City. I’d like to have a housewarming and a wedding at the same time. I think that would be great.”

Eric Stonestreet jokes that his fiancee is ‘uniquely qualified… because she can handle me’

Currently, the couple is closely monitoring the construction of the house. He joked to PEOPLE, “I enjoy waking up and going and checking on the progress and working on the property and cutting the grass. I mean, I cut a huge amount of grass.”

“This year I’ve become very adept at knowing the trails … I have my little UTV that I drive around and cut limbs so I can go under the trees,” he continued. “I would say the highlight is just working and trying to make the place really perfect.”
