Erik Spoelstra News
Erik Spoelstra, head coach of the Miami Heat, went out of his way Monday night to compliment the Celtics, from the players to the leadership, after the game and the series were finished.
However, Spoelstra claimed there was something special to defeating the Celtics at TD Garden in Game 7 Monday in order to advance to the NBA Finals after losing to Boston in the Eastern Conference Finals the previous season.
Let me start off by saying this about Boston, Spoelstra said. “We offer the Celtics organisation our hats-off. They are top notch. I make sure that everyone feels a certain way about Boston because Pat (Riley) does. That’s a responsibility I have as the caretaker.
“Having said that, they are greatly respected as rivals. They are top notch. You can tell they are a classy organisation by looking across the street at their ownership group, Brad Stevens, Joe Mazzulla, and his coaching staff. Obviously, what happened last year was on our minds, and it motivated us this year. With competition, you always expect that it would push you to a higher level. I believe that’s what you witnessed in this season of the show, having to overcome a lot of obstacles.
The Heat defeated the No. 1-seeded Bucks, the Knicks, and the Celtics to advance from the two play-in games they had to compete in. “We’ll take this without a doubt. Being able to achieve it on this court, in such a hostile environment, is poetic justice, Spoelstra said. We’ll indulge in a little celebration tonight on the flight to Denver before moving on to the following obstacle.
