He left the club announcing that Ten Hag “deserves the opportunity to show what he is more capable of.”
But the boss isn’t just grateful to be given more time and will set the rules for how things will go forward.

The boss also wants his first-team coach Benni McCarthy to get a new contract with an immediate expiry date.
Ten Hag wants those guarantees before signing a new three-year deal with just one more to run on his current deal.

After Manchester United announced Erik ten Hag was staying, they tried to explain why it had taken more than two weeks since the Dutchman paraded in the FA Cup at Wembley to actually tell him he still had a job.
A thorough review of the season was needed although Ten Hag said before the Cup final that this had been done.
The club said that they “considered all possibilities”.
In other words, ‘which manager would be the best for us, not necessarily the guy we have?’.
And the club were also at pains to make it clear how much they admired Ten Hag’s ‘commitment, dignity and professionalism’.
In other words, he didn’t publicly reveal the appalling way he was treated despite asking Ratcliffe for a public vote of confidence months before the end of the season.
Let’s recall that Ratcliffe didn’t even name Ten Haga in his ‘congratulations’ after the FA Cup was won, despite the fact that it was all down to him and the way he outplayed Pep Guardiola that day.

After learning he would be staying at Old Trafford, Ten Hag said he wanted to take the “next step” on their pre-season tour.
The Red Devils face Rosenborg in Norway on July 15 and Rangers at Murrayfield five days later.
They then travel to the USA to face Arsenal, Real Betis and Liverpool.
Ten Hag said: “Pre-season is for preparation and we have to make that our next step.
“This is one of the rare times when you have a team together and you can work on structures and standards.
“We will be as strong as possible, but of course the players who have gone far in the Copa America and the Euros will not be involved.”

He reportedly made the announcement before the FA Cup final to discuss his expected salary. But Ineos chiefs decided the former Brighton boss was not suitable for the project.
Thomas Frank
The Brentford coach met with Man Utd representatives the day before the FA Cup final. The Dane also dined with Ratcliffe, Roy Hodgson and Frank Lampard at the launch of the new Ineos car in February.
Marko Silva
The Fulham manager reportedly met Man Utd representatives face-to-face two days before the FA Cup final, around the same time Ten Hag held his press conference.
Mauricio Pochettino
He dropped out of Man Utd’s thinking in the first week of June, despite being Sir Alex Ferguson’s favourite.
Thomas Tuchel
He made a very strong impression and was good during the meeting in Monaco. Personal terms were discussed before the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss decided to withdraw from the process.
Reuben Amorim
The boss of Sporting was discussed in the hierarchy of Man Utd, but he did not make the final calculation.
Roberto Martinez
At an early stage, the coach of Portugal was considered.
