Efforts led by Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue were temporarily suspended overnight Wednesday, but resumed with renewed vigor Thursday morning. It was only late Thursday evening, around 10 pm, that encouraging news finally arrived. Ryan Smith, head of Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue, confirmed that the young girl, Esther Wang, had been found alive in what he described as a “brilliant end” to the search.
During the hike, Esther and her group headed to Steve’s Lookout on Tuesday around 2:45 p.m. However, as they descended back to camp, Wang was inadvertently separated from the group. The leader of the group immediately noticed her absence and, despite his best efforts, could not find her.
The situation was further complicated by the lack of cell reception in the area, which hampered communication efforts using her cell phone’s pings. Even so, her group was well prepared for the hike, and Wang had brought basic supplies like water and food with her.
In hopes of eliciting additional information that could help in the search, police shared Wang’s picture, along with the time and place of her disappearance, encouraging other hikers who may have been nearby to come forward.
