Eva Bohn-Chin News
A spaghetti western called 100 Rifles begs to be judged in its own right. In his leading role as a mixed Native American hero, Burt Reynolds grins the entire time. The full-blooded indigenous damsel in distress, Raquel Welch, assumes an awful Mexican accent. But Jim Brown receiving top billing as the dashing hero who not only wins the girl but also roughs her up in a squalorous love scene outraged sensibilities the most.
This was groundbreaking information for 1969, a year in which Black actors seldom ever on the screen with their white counterparts without igniting a heated national debate. But Brown would not be shamed by open racism in Hollywood, the murders of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, or legislation from the Jim Crow era that were specifically intended to keep him in power. He was the most commanding presence in the room because he was unyielding, unyielding, and always his own man. If news of his death on Friday at the age of 87 was unexpected, it’s because most people believed the football legend would outlive the Grim Reaper.
In her social media statement, Brown’s wife, Monique, withheld the cause of death. But one wonders if even death came close and most certainly did not catch him off guard. In fact, it would be difficult to find a more steadfast presence in American life than Brown, both on and off the pitch. With careful attention to detail, Spike Lee’s grand 2002 documentary Jim Brown All-American portrays the richness and depth of Brown.
A former Cleveland Brown colleague recalls a sharply dressed Brown stepping off the team bus onto an ice patch and defying gravity for what seemed like an age before walking on in one particularly memorable episode. Simply put, Brown was a man who would not submit to authority, consensus, or any other force that was equal to or greater. And what made him so dim-witted was his extraordinary athletic talent.
It was the catalyst for his departure from St. Simons Island in Georgia, the birthplace of Black self-determinism and a long history of British exploitation. It is what charmed the affluent white Wasps of Manhasset, New York, where his mother was employed as a housekeeper. It’s how Brown broke down the barriers of race at Syracuse University, where he swiftly became a lacrosse and football legend. He was inducted into the lacrosse hall of fame after winning three straight college championships.
