Eva McKend Wikipedia, Biography, Parents, Education, Wiki, Photos – WCAX-TV host Eva McKend wore her brown hair wavy for two years. This past January 13, when she was on the 11 p.m. news, her hair was a tangle of unruly dark brown curls.

On the WCAX website, someone asked, “What happened to Eve’s hair?” Another audience member commented to McKend that she appeared to be rolling in the hay backstage. Many commented on her beauty in emails and Facebook posts.
Journalists in particular are used to receiving unsolicited fashion advice from complete strangers. However, McKend, who is Vermont’s only black television host, is not accepting comments about her hair.
McKend is already an anomaly. She is a woman of color who lives in a predominantly white neighborhood and works in a non-diverse area. According to the Radio Television Digital News Association, 23 percent of television newsroom employees nationwide in 2016 were people of color.
Additionally, there is a history of black female journalists receiving criticism for their hairstyles. Despite editors’ demands that she wear a wig, Melba Tolliver, a New York television reporter, covered the 1971 wedding of Richard Nixon’s daughter wearing a short afro.
It was removed during the editing process. In 2012, a meteorologist for a local Louisiana television station named Rhonda Lee was fired from her for her reaction to a Facebook post criticizing her afro style. Black TV presenters still rarely show her natural hairstyles.
McKend’s gesture in such a situation is more than just a fashion decision. Her reveal is seen as a cultural statement, even though she claims that the decision to wear the wig and then remove it was a personal matter. Knitting can cost up to $800.
We have that standard in the professional world, and I’m against it. I’m changing things, McKend admitted. Being the only black person in any of the state’s three seasons carries a unique set of blessings and burdens.
McKend, a vivacious 27-year-old, has already expanded WCAX’s editorial reach. He has covered stories including the state’s first female hijab-wearing Norwich University cadet, alleged racial profiling by Bennington police and one of the state’s first African-American farms. He also earned a reputation for pressing political leaders with tough questions. He’s not afraid, according to his supervisor, WCAX executive producer Roger Garrity.
The executive director of the Vermont Partnership for Fairness and Diversity, Curtiss Reed Jr., summed up McKend’s strategy this way: “If people are going to judge her by her hair, they will have completely missed her journalistic excellence. She has a keen sense for the news, especially stories that affect communities of color in the state.
Culturally speaking, Vermont is a far cry from McKend’s upbringing on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. When she was a child, her mother, who worked in sales, and her Guyanese-born father, a retired carpenter, divorced her. McKend remained close to her father even though she lived with her mother.
He received a full scholarship to attend the exclusive Birch Wathen Lenox School for kindergarten through 12th grade. McKend pestered his peers in high school to engage in regular dialogues about diversity.
“I put flyers out all over the school. I’d go out of my way to talk to the white kids at lunch saying, ‘Listen, you really have to go to this, man.’ People would roll their eyes when they saw me coming, she remembered, but eventually some young people began to appear.
A self-described “social butterfly” who was elected to lead the student council in her senior year, McKend wasn’t always comfortable at school. “I really had a lot of self-confidence issues being a black lady in that white environment,” McKend said. The white guy she asked to her prom said he’d get in touch with her. She said, “He never did.”
