In the new Netflix movie by Adam Sandler Spacethe actor plays a Czech astronaut alone in space on a mission — until he finds out he’s not alone at all.
The film follows Jakub (Sandler) as he struggles with the distance from his wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan) during a long mission across the solar system. However, he soon meets a spider-like creature (voiced by Paul Dano) who claims to have traveled the universe since the beginning of time.
Dan’s character, who mostly refers to Jakub as “the skinny man” throughout the new film, finds interest in the plight of astronauts and the overall human life. She even offers to help Jakub overcome the emotional turmoil associated with his marriage.
At first, Jakub seems surprised and frightened by the creature, but they eventually develop a kind of friendship as they travel to the edge of the solar system. Jakub ends up naming the creature Hanuš, after the 15th-century Czech who is said to have built the famous Czech Astronomical Clock in Prague, after the creature admits it never had a name.

“Obviously you can think of Hanush as a creature from the beginning of time, or you can think of him as a conversational companion,” Johan Renck, the film’s director, said in the film’s press notes.
On the set of the spaceship, Sandler acted alone, with Uncut gems a star who mostly plays against the tennis ball. A “massive stuffed toy spider” and a “3D printed little Hanushka face” were also used for the film crew and Sandler to visualize the creature, according to production notes.

“Adam worked with a tennis ball and Johan had a friend who did part of the work with a spider [on-set] for him and Adam for his eye line,” Dano recently told RogerEbert.com about how Sandler worked with his spider. “He was really isolated on that ship. And then there were a bunch of stages of suffering.”

“I would love to work with Adam more,” he added, noting that he grew up idolizing Sandler’s work in comedy. “Everyone always said it, and now I can too — he’s the best. He’s a wonderful person to be with.”
Renck said Entertainment Weekly that Dano was always his first choice to voice the alien: “There’s something about his cadence and this version of shyness that he strangely portrays in a lot of the roles he plays. Also, the fact that he can be a bit creepy, to be honest.”
Sandler and Dano’s new film is based on the 2017 novel Spaceman from Bohemia by Czech author Jaroslav Kalfař. Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin and Isabella Rossellini also star in the film.
