The first season of the teen drama premiered on Netflix on December 7, 2023 and reached the top 10 in nearly 100 countries with millions watching the series. On December 19, less than two weeks after its premiere, it was announced that Netflix had renewed the series for a second season.

Melanie Halsall, creator of the series, described it as “Dawson’s Creek is meeting Bright Friday night“, the show is an adaptation of Ali Novak’s novel of the same name from 2014, which she first published on Wattpad in 2014.

Halsall told Tudum she was “beyond thrilled”, adding: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the love and support audiences have given the show and we can’t wait to re-immerse ourselves in the world of Silver Falls and the lives of these characters.”

Meanwhile, Nikki Rodriguez, who plays protagonist Jackie Howard, said of her experience on the show: “It was just a dream come true from day one of filming. I am truly honored and grateful that people have responded to the show in such a warm and positive way… I met my best friends on the show and just had the best time of my life.”

She also said that returning for another season means “everything” to the cast. Meanwhile, Noah LaLonde, who plays one of her love interests, said he can’t wait to “hang out with our best friends again.”

My life with the Walter Boys follows 15-year-old Jackie, who at the beginning of the series was recently orphaned and had to move from New York to rural Colorado after the Walters became her legal guardians.

The first season shows Jackie adjusting to her new life with the Walters and managing her feelings for Walter’s two sons. He mostly stayed true to the book, with some minor changes.

For example, Halsall explained one change to Entertainment Weeklynoting that in the book Petriw’s character Jordan Walter is also a twin, although he is not in the series.

“The TV series deviates a bit from the book — to begin with there are fewer boys in the family. Two sets of twins became just one, and that’s a pretty big change, I think people will notice,” she said.

Season 1 was filmed in Alberta, Canada, in the city of Calgary and in towns surrounding the city, including Cochrane and Crossfield. It is believed that the filming of the second season will continue in these locations, as indicated by Tudum.

The first season ended with viewers not knowing whether Nikki would choose Cole or Alex, as she leaves for NYC, a departure from the end of the book, in which she chooses Cole. Gentry told Tudum that he expects the love triangle in season two to be “Juicy with a capital J.”

Said creator Melanie Hassall Diversity that she wanted the show to be different from the book. She said that in the book, “[Nikki] and Cole decided they’d be together when she got back from New York.” However, she added: “I knew I didn’t want to do that. I thought she wouldn’t end up with any boyfriend – that she was a successful young woman, striving alone, without romance.”

Rodriguez said Teen Vogue, “Jackie has a pretty big arc in season 1. She starts out very closed off and uncomfortable with where she is, but you start to see the walls come down and I feel like she learns a lot about herself… In the end, she sort of closes off a little bit because she’s a mess, but you know, she’s going through a lot and learning about herself and growing up.”

Rodriguez also spoke with Teen Vogue about the second season of the series.

“I mean, obviously Jackie would have to go back to Colorado, but what makes her want to go back? I don’t even know. I thought about so many different options,” she told the paper, adding, “I tried to really keep an open mind. But I’m really interested in getting that first script and seeing what Jackie brings back and what she gets into.”
