Everything to Know About the Upcoming Avatar Sequels

After a huge success Avatar: The Way of Waterwhich grossed a whopping $2.3 billion at the box office, director James Cameron continues to work on the film Avatar franchise.

The first two films, released in 2009 and 2022, respectively, became the No. 1 and No. 3 highest-grossing films of all time — and audiences can’t wait to see what happens next in the franchise.

While the production Avatar 3, 4 and 5 is relatively secretive, Cameron and producer Jon Landau shared a bit about the films, giving fans a hint of what to expect from the franchise moving forward. When you talk to The Hollywood Reporter in January 2023, Cameron revealed: “We decided that we had to jump far ahead to places that people could not have predicted [for The Way of Water] and we will do it again with the film 3 also.”

The third part of the franchise is expected to appear in cinemas in 2025, with Avatar 4 next 2029 i Avatar 5 in 2031.

As with the previous one Avatar projects, Cameron has remained incredibly tight-lipped about the plot Avatar 3. However, he revealed one key aspect of the film – when he spoke to the French 20 minutes in early 2023, Cameron said the next installment will focus on a new race of people who personify the second element.

“The fire will be represented by the Ash People,” Cameron told the program. “I want to show the Na’vi from a different angle because so far I have only shown their good sides. In the first movies there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. IN Avatar 3we will do the opposite.”

Cameron also said he did Avatar the story is just beginning. We will also explore new worlds continuing the story of the main characters, Cameron revealed. “I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were the introduction, the way to set the table before serving the meal.”

When will Avatar 3 be released?

Originally, Avatar 3 was set to be released in December 2024, but Disney later changed its premiere lineup for a whole host of film franchises, including Star Wars, the Avengers and Avatar sequels. Avatar 3 it is now slated for a December 2025 release, with later films arriving in 2029 and 2031.

Zoe Saldaña announced the news on Instagram in June 2023 and joked about the delay. “Great! I’ll be 53 when the last Avatar comes out,” the actress wrote. “I was 27 when I made the first Avatar movie.”

Despite the delays, Cameron told PEOPLE in December 2023 that “three is actually a lot simpler than two” in terms of production.

Avatar 3 has already been shot and is currently in post-production. Cameron took an atypical approach to sequels and filmed Avatar 2 and 3 At the same time. He said Entertainment Weekly in December 2022 that he did so to avoid his teenage actors looking too old in later films, comparing his dilemma to the popular Netflix series.

“I love it Stranger Thingsbut you get Stranger Things effect where they should still be in high school, but they look like they’re 27,” said the director.

Cameron specifically mentioned his concerns about star Jack Champion, who Cameron said was “growing like a weed”. The production team was also concerned that delays related to COVID-19 would force them to rework the final installments.

“I imagined scenarios where we don’t go back to work for a year and a half and we’re totally screwed because he is.” [Champion] aged, and then we have to go back and shoot again with another guy,” said Cameron. However, the director’s worries did not materialize – the production team made a deal with the New Zealand government to keep the small team filming in order to get the footage they needed .

Fans will see many familiar faces returning for the third film, including Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Saldaña (Neytiri), Sigourney Weaver (Dr. Grace Augustine and Kiri), Joel David Moore (Norm Spellman), Champion (Javier ‘Spider ‘ Socorro), Stephen Lang (Colonel Miles Quaritch) and Britain Dalton (Lo’ak).

Cameron also confirmed to PEOPLE in December 2023 that Kate Winslet would reprise her role The way of water role in the third part with training in the “shamanic practice of husband and wife”.

“When you see her [Winslet] doing that purification ritual to try to bring Kitty to life in the movie and some of the things she’s going to do in the third movie, that’s based on real practice,” Cameron said of Winslet’s work in Avatar 2 and 3.

A host of new actors will also be joining, including Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, Game of Thrones star Oona Chaplin and Harry Potter alum David Thewlis.

Much less is known about the plot Avatar 4, which will be published in December 2029. However, in an Entertainment Weekly in a 2022 interview, Cameron said that on page 35 of the fourth film’s script, there was a big shift forward in time, allowing the young actors to age naturally within the film’s story.

“They’re young men, young women at that point, when we get to the B-side of that time jump,” he told the publication.

Cameron told PEOPLE more details about the plot moving forward in December 2023. “We see them and then we go for six years and come back,” the director said. “And so the part we’re going back to is the part we haven’t shot yet. So we’ll start on that after three are released.”

He also said collider 2022, which the studio liked Avatar 4 the script. “I can’t tell you the details,” Cameron said, “but all I can say is that when I submitted the script for 2, the studio gave me three pages of notes. And when I submitted the script for 3they gave me a page of notes, so I was recovering.”

He continued, “When I submitted the script for 4, a creative executive for movies wrote me an email that said, ‘Shit, f…’. And I said, ‘Well, where are the notes?’ And she said, ‘Those are notes.’ Because it kind of freaks out in a good way, right?”

Some of Avatar 4 was recorded in tandem with 2 and 3 and it’s already finished.

When appearing on Who’s talking to Chris Wallace at the beginning of 2023, per The Hollywood ReporterCameron talked about his timeline for the upcoming sequels.

“Avatar 4 and 5 both are written. We even have some 4 in a can. At this point we started the franchise. We started a saga that can now unfold in multiple films.”

Landau previously confirmed this schedule in an interview for 2022 Diversity. “We’ve finished most of the first act Avatar 4 and there were logistical reasons why we had to do that,” said the producer. “We designed much of the entire film for Avatar 4 but we didn’t actually shoot the whole thing — just the first act.”

Speaking to Gizmodo in 2022, Landau revealed a major plot point from Avatar 5to be released in December 2031 — the producer said the fifth film will bring the Na’vi to Earth.

“I didn’t want to talk about it, but now I subsequently heard that it was Jim [Cameron] talked about it a little bit,” said the producer. “There’s a part of the story in the fifth movie where we go to Earth. And we go to open people’s eyes, open Neytira’s eyes, to what exists on Earth.”

Landau’s statement also revealed that Neytiri (Saldaña’s character) will survive the next two sequels and be an integral character in the final film.

“The country is not only represented by the RDA [the evil organization in the film; the abbreviation stands for Resources Development Administration], just as you are defined by the choices you make in life, not all humans are bad,” Landau said. “Not all Na’vi are good. And that is the case here on Earth. And we want to expose Neytiri to that.”
