“Maybe we’ll have another one A long way from the sleeve,” McGregor hinted last Thursday. “We have an idea and we’ve started talking about it, so it’s in the early stages of fermentation. We’re definitely going to do another one, but I’m not in a position to talk about where that would be yet.”
The Obi-Wan Kenobi the star couldn’t resist dropping a little hint.
“We did the Northern Hemisphere, and then we did the whole continent of Africa, so there’s not much [we haven’t done]”, McGregor said about his previous travels. “But when you think about it, our route is only a thin line across that vast land, so there’s a lot we haven’t seen.”

While thinking about his A long way trips, McGregor added that both he and Boorman, 57, wanted to give back to the people they met along the way as they explored each country’s history and culture. This desire led them to partner with UNICEF, an agency that provides humanitarian and development aid to children around the world.
“Being young fathers at the time, we wanted to help a children’s charity,” McGregor said of his preparations for the first A long way series. “It’s UNICEF [an organization] we were always impressed and wanted to be associated with them, so we asked them when we were planning Long Way Round, if you could show us a few of your projects and tell them our route. They were just fantastic to work with.”

The Moulin Rouge the star then recalled three projects he worked on with UNICEF. The first was in Ukraine, where motorcyclists helped children affected by the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. “We were blown away by the courage and determination of these people,” McGregor said of the children and volunteers he met.
He then continued on his motorcycle to Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, where he worked with UNICEF to set up climbing walls and competitions for children who had faced abuse and violence. “These climbing rocks completely turned those areas around and the kids had something they could physically put effort into,” McGregor recalled. “There were kids who became really good climbers and stars in the area.”
The latest project took place in Mongolia, where travelers were “very moved” by children living in “large underground heating ducts” during the country’s cold winter. Mongolia is where the father of five would later adopt his daughter, Jamyan McGregor, 22, who was then 4 in 2006.

Riding a motorcycle was instrumental in helping the couple meet people “in a different way” than driving a car, according to McGregor.
He mentioned that in Mongolia and Kazakhstan “there are still people who are nomadic”, where “the land does not belong to anyone”.

“When we showed up on our bikes, they treated us like them,” McGregor said. “You are sensitive to weather conditions. If it rains, you get wet. If it’s cold, you’re cold too, so they’re just very friendly. I don’t know if we showed up in big jeeps or four-by-fours, he would have felt the same way.”

“I see more and I’m more aware of my surroundings,” McGregor said. “It ruins driving a car because you have to be so careful when you’re riding a motorbike that you become incredibly defensive and aware of what’s going on.”
“And then when you’re in the car, you drive it the same way — which is what you’re supposed to do anyway,” McGregor added with a laugh. “Someone else will take me home, don’t worry.”
