Ex-England & Man City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson died £8million in debt – as his house goes up for sale

SVEN-Goran Eriksson died £8m in debt and his house is now up for sale, it has been reported.

Football was plunged into mourning last August when the former England manager died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 76.

Sven died after a battle with pancreatic cancer

The legendary coach’s estate was released today – revealing he owed £8.6m when he died.

The document reveals that he owned £4.8 million in assets, according to prominent Swedish newspaper Gotesborg-Posten.

However, the asset register also shows he had debts totaling £8.6m.

This means that the property had a deficit of around £3.8 million, the Mirror reports.

It comes as Sven’s lakeside estate on a secluded property in Sunne, Sweden has been put up for sale for around £1.8m.

Preparations for the sale of his seven-bedroom villa, which has its own beach, began in September.

Eriksson paid £420,000 for the late 19th century house in 2002 when he was boss of the Three Lions and his partner was Italian lawyer Nancy Dell’Olio.

The Sotheby’s agent says he has since “left his personal mark on both the interior and exterior.”

The value of the property rose to £3 million in the last decade, but has now fallen to almost half that figure.

The home, which covers 835 square meters, has several reception rooms and a library.

And it’s also as sporty as you’d expect.

Outside there is a 250 square meter pool house, complete with salt water pool, spa, sauna, jacuzzi, gym and relaxation area.

There is also a tennis court, a jetty, a motorized floating platform, a sandy bay and gazebos along the shore.

Lawyer Anders Runebjer, who was a close friend of Eriksson’s, reportedly expects the house to sell very easily.

Runebjer believes the reduced valuation of £1.8m is more realistic for buyers, Swedish outlet Expressen reports.

He also pointed to the freedom and natural environment offered by the property.

Sven died on August 26 last year after suffering from pancreatic cancer.

During his five-year tenure in charge, Sven guided England to quarter-final appearances at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, as well as Euro 2004.

Sven was given the Three Lions job after Kevin Keegan quit following England’s 1-0 defeat by Germany in October 2000.

He previously won the first Serie A title in 26 years with Lazio, and after leaving England went on to manage Manchester City and the Mexico national team.

Due to health problems, Eriksson was unfortunately forced to step down as sporting director at Swedish club Karlstad in February 2023.

After bravely announcing his cancer diagnosis, his lifelong wish came true when he led the Liverpool Legends as they played in a charity match against Ajax at Anfield in March.

The death of the Swede caused an outpouring of grief for the former coach of Manchester City and Leicester.

David Beckham and Roy Hodgson were among the mourners at Eriksson’s funeral in his hometown of Torsby, near Sunne.

1977 – After playing professional football in Sweden, Sven-Goran Eriksson began his managerial career at the Swedish club Degerfors.

2000 – Led Lazio to the Serie A title and became one of the hottest coaches in the world.

2001 – Following the resignation of Kevin Keegan, he was appointed as the next full-time England manager in February 2001. He oversaw 66 games with the Three Lions, winning 39 and losing just 12.

2002 – Eriksson led England to the 2002 World Cup with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes and David Beckham in his squad. Three lions were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

2004 – The legendary manager also led the Three Lions to Euro 2004, but they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Portugal.

2006 – Eriksson leads England to another World Cup, his last tournament in charge, before resigning.

2007 – The Swede took over at Manchester City a year after leaving his job in England and oversaw 45 games.

2010 – After coaching Mexico, the Ivory Coast and Notts County following his split with Man City, Erikson took over at Leicester and saved them from relegation. After his time with the Foxes, he went on to manage China and the Philippines.

2024 – In January 2024, Eriksson announced that he had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. Three months later, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of leading Liverpool in the Legends Game at Anfield, before passing away in August.
