Ex-MLB Player Danny Serafini Arrested in Connection with Murder of Father-in-Law, Attempted Murder of Mother-in-Law

A former MLB pitcher was arrested this week in Nevada following a two-year investigation into the murder and attempted murder of his reported father-in-law and mother-in-law in 2021.

Danny Serafini, a former first-round pick for the Minnesota Twins, was arrested Friday in Winnemucca, Nevada, by authorities in connection with the June 2021 slaying of 70-year-old Robert Gary Spohr and the attempted murder of 68-year-old Wendy Wood, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said. in California he shared on Facebook.

Serafini (49) was arrested on the same day as suspect Samantha Scott (33), who was arrested in Las Vegas.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office said in a release that the arrests come two years and four months after Spohr was found shot to death in his North Lake Tahoe home while his wife, Wood, was “taken to a nearby hospital where she recovered from her injuries.” She died a year later.

As police note, in the “early stages” of the investigation, authorities reviewed the home’s “surveillance video,” providing them with footage of “a man wearing a hood covering his face and carrying a backpack walking to the house several hours before the murder occurred.”

“Since then, PCSO detectives have worked tirelessly over the past two years, devoting countless hours to follow-up by detectives, along with the DA’s office,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook.

“Information and evidence gathered by detectives led them to identify Serafini and Scott as suspects; both suspects are known to each other and to the victims.”

As the office noted, Serafini and Scott will next be extradited from Nevada to California.

“Today, justice was served,” Sheriff Wayne Woo said in a statement. “The arrest of those responsible for the tragic events that unfolded in Homewood, North Lake Tahoe in 2021 is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our detectives, law enforcement partners and perseverance in our pursuit of the truth.”

“Please understand that my team’s commitment to solving the most complex cases prevails, and those who harm our community will be held accountable every time,” Woo added.

Citing Sergeant David Smith of the sheriff’s office, NBC News reports that Serafini is the son-in-law of both victims. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment Saturday. It is not clear whether Serafini or Scott have attorneys secured.

Scott is listed in Clark County Detention Center records as an out-of-state fugitive. NBC notes that Serafini is listed as an inmate at the Humboldt County Detention Center and has been charged as a fugitive from justice.

The former MLB relief pitcher spent seven seasons in the league, where he played for the Twins, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies, according to the paper.
