Because Gandy‘ Damian Terriquez, who stars alongside Kim Cattrall in the exciting new Netflix series, was unthinkable less than a year ago. The actor, who is not bisexual and uses the pronoun he/she, has previously worked in Hollywood as a dancer and later as a backstage producer, but often wonder if there’s room for them as gender-nonconforming Latino stars on screen.
“My concern at the time was whether there were enough career-sustaining roles to try to do this?” Damian said in a chat with HELLO! from their base in LA. “I have my manager and agent through people I meet on set [in production]and I spent a lot of time there learning and thinking, ‘This is what I want to do, but still be myself,’ they continued. But mostly, the 25-year-old explains: ‘I think I could get a job here, but it might just be an episode.’

Becoming a ‘glamorous’ star
However, the Netflix star has come close to Damian, who now lives outside LA with fiance Luke and their miniature pet schnauzers Nadia and new puppy Nala. Smiling, the young actor explained the “naughty” moment when he accepted the invitation to play the lead role Gandy. Damian explained, “I didn’t get the role until they started filming the first episode, so I got to know the other people involved, especially Kim,” Damian explained.

“When I auditioned, I thought, ‘Oh, I’m not going to get this,’ because, you know, usually when you read that a celebrity is attached, especially someone who carries As iconic as Kim, you’ll be like, ‘Someone else will take it.’ .” But Damian was what the team wanted, so it was Damian who was cast as the inspirational drag queen: the ironically named Dizmal loser.

Gandy tells the story of Marc (Miss Benny), a young gay and heterosexual makeup artist and enthusiast whose life is turned upside down (but for the better) when he gets a job. works for makeup superstar Madolyn Addison (Kim Cattrall). Damian describes him as Devil in Prada meeting Ugly BettyBut with a focus on gays and makeup, young Marco’s journey eventually leads to an encounter with Dismal.

“Dizmal is a fun, club-going friend, the cranky friend is almost a counterpoint to all the glitz and glamor going on in the office,” Damian explains. “I’m a friend like a shoulder to cry on… I give new perspectives on the problems the main cast is having, and more often than not I solve them.” Dizmal – who isn’t binary – is also an inspirational figure, Damian said, suggesting to Marc “someone in your life who seems to have figured it all out” to look to.
A personal story
For Damian, coming face to face with his own strange identity came along with a very supportive family life. His parents divorced and his father died when he was young, so Damian, born in San Diego, was raised by his mother in what he describes as a matrilineal Mexican family. The family moved to his mother’s hometown of Tijuana, Mexico when he was young, but returned to California when he attended high school.

As part of a large family where their mother is one of nine and their grandmother is one of thirteen, Damian jokes that “nobody is the first to do something” – however, they say added that they were “first on television”. However, while the non-binary actor said he was glad he didn’t face much discrimination or harsh judgment in his family, several relatives asked him: “‘Why do you to wear it?’ But it didn’t come from any malicious place,” he said.
When it comes to more conservative reactions to his wearing heels and being a Californian about it, Damian also has a sane stance on staring or hating. They say, “I have the mantra that other people’s opinions of me are nothing, it’s none of my business. “There are certainly people who try to make you feel bad, but they’re not worth your time,” he says.
Future role model
Being an inspiration to the gay community, especially gay and non-binary Hispanics, is something Damian will have to get used to once they’re Netflix stars. But most importantly, the pride for the new star is a symbol that “the war is not over”.

“I’m very lucky,” continued the actor: “I’m lucky to appear on television and get noticed, and hopefully after the series, there will be a foundation. But I think Pride, especially in today’s environment… is a reminder that we’re not done yet.” They concluded: “Pride isn’t just a parade in West Hollywood… It’s about people who can’t socially or financially can’t be in those spaces. I think it’s about who weren’t there.”

However, the life of the rising star of Netflix is not entirely without problems. “It’s a bit scary and scary and scary because I’m so used to, I mean, I used to be anonymous,” Damian admits. In addition, the rising actor explains the exciting opportunities of becoming a star.

“I’ve been with the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation in LA since college,” he says. “And now with this platform coming out, I have to work more and more on the ambassador side.” Damian also works with the Connie Norman Transgender Empowerment Center in LA and is again excited to use their platform to promote her work. “That’s why I try to focus on all the good things and the bad things that can come up,” they confidently concluded on their topic of rising stardom.
Working with Kim Cattrall
Another highlight from the experience Gandy naturally began working with his cast and crew, especially Sex and the City icon Kim Cattrall. “When I took this job, I really didn’t think I would do any scenes with her,” Damian said modestly, but the script had other ideas. “Our paths cross a few times… and those are pretty important scenes about the actual plot of the movie, which is interesting.”

But what was it like working with the acting legend on set? “I’m really nervous talking to her,” says Damian, who grew up in love with Samantha’s “amazing” looks. Sex and the city movies they admit they “watched a lot” as children and realized their own fascination with similar attacks. In the end, the two really got along backstage, talking about all things stage, fashion, and design. Damian, who studied fashion at university, explains, “It was so amazing and it felt like the whole world melted,” he continued, fearing no cliché.

When it comes to the future of the couple’s show, which the 66-year-old also produces, Damian believes there’s more to come if Netflix allows it. “This is just the beginning,” they suggested, explaining, “There is much more to come [the characters] I had to, and when the first season ended, I thought, ‘Oh, these are these people, now what?'”
wedding planning
Along with his booming career, there are also marriage issues for him and his partner Luke. A couple who met while dancing are slowly planning their special day.

“It all depends on next year and future projects,” Damian explained, but said they’ve decided the ceremony will take place in Mexico “so all my family can be there… because because flying 400 doesn’t make any sense people come to America!” But Damian was happy to call his South American partner, in his 30s, as his husband.

The couple’s daily life has mostly revolved around Damian’s work for the Netflix series lately. “I work with my husband… I don’t have a hair and makeup team, so I do my own hair and my fiance does my makeup,” she explains, before adding that life is “real” interesting” there. moment.

Above Gandy, Damian is also now much more enthusiastic about his future prospects in the industry. “I feel really good about it now. Especially after seeing all the stuff that ended up on my desk. [post Glamorous].” I hope the story is like Gandy has such a diverse cast and story that shares more of a strange experience than just the traditional coming-of-age story that marks a change in the “beginning” industry. “I’m so excited and I hope to be a part of it [new industry focus] look,” Damian said.
