One family decided to have a little extra fun by giving gifts this holiday season.

In the run-up to the holidays, Kaylee Hulse and her family decided to play a prank on her grandmother, Cloye McGinley, 75, by “borrowing” items from her house and giving them to her for Christmas.

“I like to play little pranks on my grandmother because she’s very trusting and always has the best reactions to things,” Hulse, who is extremely close to her grandmother, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I saw a TikTok last Christmas with people taking things from their grandparents’ houses and using them as gifts. I knew it would be a perfect, harmless prank on her, so I told my mom about the idea.”

“We got my grandfather, Jackson McGinley, involved so we could take things from her house when she wasn’t home,” he adds. “I stole a white and red coffee mug, a rock that said ‘sorry’, a wall sign from the bathroom that said ‘blessed’, two Chicken soup for the soul books, a Bath & Body Works hand soap and body spray set, her Clinique lotion, a blue butterfly fridge magnet, a leopard print cardigan, a small ‘You’re the friend everyone wishes they had’ sign and a hand-painted frog.”

When Christmas came, Hulse, who lives in Corpus Christi, Texas, just five minutes from her grandmother, worried that McGinley wouldn’t recognize the items. However, when McGinley saw the red and white coffee cup, the first item selected, she recognized it immediately.

“Everyone was fighting to stay calm as she responded to each item,” Hulse says, recalling the moment. “She later told us that she kept feeling bad because she knew things were cheap and not the best gifts to exchange.”

She says that at that moment, her uncle, Trey Gann, couldn’t stop laughing and had to cover up his laughter with a cough, causing his grandmother to rub his back and offer him water because she thought he was having a coughing fit.

“My favorite moment was definitely her reaction to the frog,” he adds. “She loves frogs and has a million things related to frogs in her home. She always told me growing up that ‘frog’ is short for ‘Rely on God forever.’ When I chose the frog, I had no idea that it was one that she had hand-painted herself, but I’m very glad because she responded better that way.”

“She was shocked when she saw that frog 🤣🤣🤣,” wrote one person.

“Lol grandma has a great memory!! 😂 She recognized all her items,” another user commented.

Someone else said, “She knows everything in her house, don’t play with her.”

“I saw how the comments started pouring in and everyone fell in love with her,” adds Hulse. “When we told her how many people had seen the video, she was so shocked. She called me afterwards and told me how happy she was that we did it. She said, ‘You have no idea what you’ve done for this family. It’s going to be talked about again. for years.’ ”

After the exchange, Hulse and her family collected all the items and returned them to her grandmother to take home.

“I hope people will appreciate the relationships they have with their grandparents and realize how precious those family moments are,” says Hulse. “There were a lot of comments from people who miss their grandparents and wish they were still around to do things like this with them. Don’t wait until your loved ones are gone – spend time with them now.”

“Also, don’t take life too seriously,” she adds. “There were some comments saying the joke was mean, but my grandma absolutely loved it. She’s always such a good sport and knows how to take a joke.”
