Pundits Roy Keane and Gary Neville urged Southgate to “break his plan” at half-time and try something new.

But he didn’t make a change until the 66th minute, when he brought on Cole Palmer for Kieran Trippier and moved Bukayo Saka to left-back.

The next substitution came in the 84th minute and seemed to cause some confusion.

Southgate brought on Eberechi Eze for Kobbie Mainoo in the second toss of the dice.

When the change came, goalkeeper Pickford appeared to frown and put his arms out in confusion.

After seeing the Everton stopper’s reaction on TV, the social media user wrote: “Wait did Pickford and Stones just look confused in that substitution??? No, Southgate is too funny.”

While another added: “John Stones and Pickford are even confused with that Mainoo sub.”

Southgate waited four minutes into six added minutes to make his third change, bringing on Ivan Toney for Phil Foden.

At half-time of extra time, Southgate bravely substituted both of his goalscorers, replacing Bellingham and Kane with Conor Gallagher and Ezri Konso.

England held on to win 2-1, pipping Slovakia and entering the quarter-finals with Switzerland next Saturday.

Before today’s match, Pickford suffered an injury scare.

The Tri Lions No.1 appeared to injure his left wrist in the warm-up, but was ready to play.
