Since the Fast & Furious movies have always put an emphasis on family, the familial relationships between new characters and existing ones are something that has become more common. F9 introduced John Cena’s Jakob as Dom’s secret younger brother, while Jason Momoa’s Fast X villain appears to be related to Fast Five‘s villain. While Tess’ scenes in the Fast X trailer are short, she’s established as a character who Dom and Letty trust and is more than capable of taking care of herself in a fight. Both of those teases align with the idea that Brie Larson is Brian’s sister in Fast 10.
The footage might not include any other specific evidence that Brie Larson’s Fast X character’s full name is Tess O’Conner, but it still fits within the context of the film. The hint that Jason Momoa’s Dante is Reyes’ son and confirmation that Rita Moreno plays Dom’s grandmother shows how the movie is expanding different families that are important to the franchise. Not exploring more of the O’Conner family would be strange, so introducing Brian’s sister through Brie Larson’s character works.
What Brie Larson’s Character Being On Dom’s Side Means For Fast x
Knowing that Brie Larson’s character is on Dom’s side in Fast X would be extra special if Tess is Brian O’Conner’s sister. Since the franchise cannot explore Dom and Brian’s relationship anymore without using a CGI Paul Walker, the addition of his sister would mean that Brian’s presence would still be felt in some way. There might not be an established history between Dom and Tess, but Vin Diesel and Brie Larson could join forces to give audiences a taste of what the Fast & Furious franchise has been missing without Walker.
Of course, Tess working with Dom and being Brian’s sister in Fast X will only create more questions about why Paul Walker’s character is not involved in the new fight. There is no perfect explanation for his continued absence that fits with Furious 7‘s ending and the idea that the franchise does not want to kill Brian. However, the ability for Fast X to further honor Paul Walker and continue his legacy by having Brie Larson play Brian’s sister could be worth it.
