Federica Lombardi News

The field of classical music has become increasingly global over the last generation. Artists travel the world with excruciating frequency, and the travel restrictions due to the pandemic have shown just how untenable that paradigm has become.

European opera houses have seen a cycle of last-minute cast changes in recent months. Although it has had its fair share, London’s Royal Opera House must be delighted that its revival of Mozart’s Figaro Nozza has survived with the loss of just one lead singer.

Extra effort was made to book a cast that was almost exclusively Italian. With the exception of the Englishwoman Susanna and the Irishman Basilio, all the Italian singers at the opera’s 1786 Vienna premiere are known for their elegant Italian cutting and witty comic libretto.

Overall this revival was great. Every aspect of David McVicar’s attractive production has been updated to suit the new set, including the running gag about Susanna having to stand on a box while she plays the much taller countess. Although McVicar’s Figaro is more comedic this time than before, the revolutionary fire still burns beneath the surface.

Federica Lombardi, a young soprano, leads the group as an elegantly sung countess who displays impeccable musicianship in her two arias. Davide Luciano has been replaced, and Germán E Alcántara now plays the cartoonish, predatory, potentially aggressive and borderline Count. Giulia Semenzato and Riccardo Fassi, who plays Figaro and is a talented comedian, are lovely as Susanna and Figaro.

Hanna Hipp, one of the few non-Italians, plays Cherubino in a wonderfully goofy way. The musical performance was excellent thanks to music director Antonio Pappano, who extracted drama and character from every word. Who could resist the excellent singing of Lombardi and Semenzato in the Slov duet? The return of live opera is so exciting.

Lise Davidsen will arrive in London relieved to learn that her brief European tour has gone almost exactly to plan. The Barbican artist in the spotlight this season is Norwegian soprano Davidsen, who won the 2015 Operalia competition and shocked the world with her performance. Her short cycle of performances and seminars began with this recital with compatriot pianist Leif Ove Andsnes.

Grieg of his last album composed the entire opening half. The performances well captured the original rhythms of Haugtussa, Grieg’s only song cycle, even though Davidsen’s magnificent soprano enjoyed far more volume than required for the song repertoire, aided by the crystal-clear accompaniment.
