Five Nights at Freddy’s a surprise hit at the box office this Halloween.
Despite industry projections for a $50 million opening weekend, director Emma Tammi’s horror film earned $80 million at the domestic box office, according to Diversity.
Five Nights at Freddy’s it also became available to stream on Peacock on Friday, the same day it hit theaters.
According to Diversity, Five Nights at Freddy’s had the second-biggest opening weekend of all time for a video game adaptation, just behind the $146 million from Movie Super Mario Bros earlier this year.
Additionally, the film is set for the biggest opening weekend on Halloween weekend. Puss in Boots he previously held that record with his $34 million in 2011, according to Diversity.

The film expanded its box office potential by securing a PG-13 rating, a decision that director Tammi has defended in recent interviews given the dark, gory subject matter of the video game’s source material.

While the filmmakers “knew that some of the fans would want an R-rated version of this movie,” she said Forbes“I’d say I’m not expecting an R-rated version on this one.”
