Florence Pugh Was ‘Fearless’ and ‘Committed’ to Shaving Her Head for We Live in Time, Says Director (Exclusive)

Crowley, 55, exclusively told PEOPLE ahead of their film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, Sept. 6, that he was “flabbergasted” Pugh, 28, shaved her head for the role of Almut, who is diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer in one moment We live in time.

The director admits he considered options to give Pugh the shaved head look – but Midsommar the actress had a different idea.

“Before I went to meet [Pugh]Me, being conscientious, went to my wonderful hair and makeup lady and said, ‘Look, how are we going to do this? Because if you can’t shave it, what are you going to do?’ ” Crowley recalls. “So I had all kinds of less good ways in mind to do it, but before I could even say anything about any of that, she said, ‘By the way, I’m shaving my head.’ ”

Crowley seemed surprised by that Little Women choice of star.

“I wasn’t making an argument for her not to do it. I was stunned because I knew she was going to go and do a Marvel movie, and we pushed ourselves right into the window because her Marvel movie just took a little bit of a step back,” he says, referring to Pugh’s role Jelena Belove from MCU.

“So she’s fearless, Florence, and really dedicated,” he adds.

Crowley also talked about the chemistry between Pugh and her We live in time costar, Andrew Garfield, saying it can be “hard to pin down.”

“They didn’t know each other, they’re quite different types of actors, but on the second day of rehearsals I started seeing lightning in a bottle, so to speak, and it became very exciting,” he said. he remembers.

“And I think it was that they would just fall into each other’s presence,” Crowley continues. “That sounds mystical, but it was really about the level of connection between the two of them.”

According to the film’s official synopsis, “Almut and Tobias [Garfield] they come together in a surprising encounter that changes their lives. As they embark on a journey challenged by the constraints of time, they learn to appreciate every moment of the unconventional path their love story has taken, in director John Crowley’s deeply moving decade-spanning romance.”

We live in time premiering in US theaters on October 11.
