The Villages is the largest retirement community in Florida and there is a myth that it is the “STD Capital of the USA”. However, Tampa Bay Times published a report in 2022 that found this not to be the case. According to the report, three counties, including The Villages, have lower rates of sexually transmitted diseases compared to Florida as a whole. The rate of seniors in one of those counties, Sumter County, was about one per 10,000 in 2019, compared to six per 10,000 seniors statewide. Tampa Bay Times reported.
