Freud was born on Sunday, October 2, 1960, in Mumbai (aged 59 at the time of his death). His star sign was Libra. He graduated from St. Andrews High School, Mumbai and St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. He then studied at the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Mumbai. He later completed a course at Les Roches Bluche in Switzerland.

He started his career as a Departmental Chef (Station Chef) at the Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, Mumbai.
He then worked as a sous chef at the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai. Later, he moved to New York and started working as a departmental chef at Beech & Bamboo in New York. In 1997, he partnered with restaurateur Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group to open a restaurant in New York called “Tabla”. In 2010, the restaurant closed down after failing to attract more customers.

In 2011, he participated in the third season of Top Chef Masters as a contestant and won the championship. In 2012, he partnered with Mayer to open a restaurant in New York City, “North End Grill”. It was one of the most popular restaurants in Manhattan, New York, and after nearly six years, the restaurant closed. He co-founded the hospitality company “Hunger Inc” with Samir Seth and Thomas Zacharias. In 2016, he opened the famous restaurant “Paowalla”, which was later renamed “Bombay Bread Bar”. He opened his own restaurants in Mumbai named “The Bombay Canteen”, “Bombay Sweet Shop” and “O Pedro”.

On March 8, 2020, he flew from Mumbai to New York via Frankfurt Airport. After arriving in New York, he developed a fever and was later diagnosed with COVID-19. He was admitted to the Hillside Medical Center in Montclair, New Jersey. He died on March 25, 2020, 15 days after contracting COVID-19.
