Reports indicate that there’s a chance of a crossover between Fortnite and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate taking place sometime in the future. Fortnite is arguably the most prominent battle royale in the world, and its cultural legacy is nigh-impossible to deny. Currently the iconic game is celebrating its Fortnitemares event, getting into the Halloween spirit with a slew of spooky challenges.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has surely lived up to the tagline it used before release: “everyone is here.” Not only has the game brought in every character that ever appeared in a previous Smash game, it has swollen its roster with an increasingly outlandish and unexpected cast of DLC characters. These DLC packs encapsulate a lot of surprising crossovers, including the player character from PS4-exclusive JRPG Persona 5, Banjo & Kazooie, and most recently, even Minecraft‘s Steve. With such surprising faces turning up to test their mettle, fans are eternally eager to find out which DLC character will get tossed in next.
Recent murmurings suggest that Fortnite could be the newest addition. The rumor comes from prominent Fortnite leaker FireMonkey (via Dexerto). FireMonkey cites a credible but anonymous source who took part in a recent Zoom call between Geoff Keighley and Epic Games Creative Director Donald Mustard. According to FireMonkey, Mustard shared a lot of details about the future of Fortnite. Apparently there will be an announcement at the Game Awards in December, and that this season’s in-game event is “the biggest event they’ve ever done.” Most notably, however, FireMonkey’s source mentioned the possibility of Fortnite content appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Mustard refused to comment when asked about that possibility, which many fans have taken as a noteworthy sign.
This is a very tenuous leak, and even if it’s true, it’s not much to go on. There could be numerous reasons why Mustard refused to comment on Fortnite appearing in Smash. It would certainly be a significant crossover, though. Both games have a very well-established reputation for bringing in content from other intellectual properties; Smash has its crossover DLCs, and Fortnite is in the middle of a large-scale event featuring Marvel superheroes. Bringing these two totally unrelated but wildly popular video games together would definitely make waves in the gaming community.
It’s never a good idea to trust leaks unconditionally. False information is everywhere on the internet, and everything that doesn’t come from an official source should be taken with a grain of salt. This leak is tenuous and vague at best, and a lot more information will have to come to light before anyone should take it as a fact. Still, fans of Fortnite might have something very big to look forward to in the future of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
