Four airports stop ALL flights to clear heavy snow covering runways – sparking knock-on delays for thousands of Brits

FOUR airports were forced to close their runways this morning as the Met Office issued three more weather warnings for snow and ice.

Passengers due to depart from Bristol, John Lennon’s Liverpool, Manchester and Aberdeen Airport were thrown into chaos as every flight was grounded.

Down south, Bristol bosses grounded planes until 8am as staff worked to clear the runway.

In an online posting, the airport said: “Notice to passengers, due to the current weather conditions, all flights are currently suspended…further notices will be issued as information becomes available.”

Liverpool John Lennon Airport is closed to clear snow and prevent icing – and is expected to reopen at 10.30am.

The airport said: “Snow is currently affecting the airport. Flight delays are possible so please contact your airline directly and allow sufficient travel time.

“Safety is our highest priority so we thank you for your patience while we clean the concrete surfaces and the runway before reopening.”

Aberdeen Airport in Scotland was also closed – flights to London, Amsterdam and Norway had to be cancelled.

Scotland’s airport has since reopened.

However, all passengers are still being urged to check their flights before traveling to the airport to avoid chaos for thousands.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice in the Bristol area – as far as Blackpool – on Monday.

The warning, which was in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday, warned of travel disruption due to sleet and snow.

A further two warnings were issued for Northern Ireland and most of Scotland.

It comes as Manchester Airport reopens its two runways after closing them for the third day in a row due to snow.

The airport announced at 2 a.m. that the runways were closed “due to heavy snow” and shortly after 5 a.m. it said they had reopened.

The statement said: “Our runways are now open, but as a result of the earlier closure, some departures and arrivals may still experience delays.

“Please check with your airline for the latest updates and allow extra time for your travel.”

At least 23 flights due to arrive between 4.40pm on Monday and 1am on Tuesday were diverted to other airports, affecting around 4,000 passengers.

Commuters suffered through a bumpy journey on Monday, with major roads and rail lines blocked.

Hundreds of schools were closed across the country, in areas including Lancashire, Yorkshire and north-east Scotland.
