After graduating from HAVO, he spent two years at the Go Ahead Eagles football residential school in Deventer, where he obtained his VWO diploma. In his teenage years, he played football for the club’s junior team. He also played amateur football for FC Hilversum. In 1984, he moved to Mallorca and worked as a hotel sports entertainer for seven months.
