New York subway attack
On April 12, 2022, an attacker shot and killed multiple people on a Manhattan-bound N subway car of the New York City Subway in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The mass shooting reportedly began at 8:24 a.m. after the train left the 59th Street station, sources said. The attacker put on a gas mask and threw two smoke canisters, usually bought online, onto the floor of the train car. 380 caliber handgun as the train approached the 36th Street Station. The suspect reportedly grunted before putting on a gas mask. According to a police officer, the attacker fired at least 33 shots during the incident and the gun jammed.
According to a passenger named Yav Montano, 24, the entire carriage was filled with smoke. He said,
Difficulty breathing, difficulty seeing. It was difficult to hear or pay attention to the chaos going on. “

After the train arrived at 36th Street Station, injured and frightened passengers got off the platform, where police arrived at 8:30 a.m. There were no cameras at the 36th Street station due to a computer glitch, and police obtained the suspect’s image from a bystander’s cellphone video, according to an officer. The footage also revealed the chaos during the evacuation. When the train arrived at the 25th Street station, after police directed passengers to leave the station, passengers panicked and ran for the exits, a panic that led to more injuries.
Investigation and recovery
After the incident, investigators found a gun, three extended magazines, an ax, gasoline, four smoke grenades and a bag of consumer-grade fireworks. Police claim the gun was not stolen.
Investigators also found a credit card at the scene that they said was used to rent a U-Haul. According to police, they found car keys on the shooter. On the afternoon of April 12, 2022, investigators tracked the vehicle in Gravesend, Brooklyn (approximately 5 miles southeast of the Metro station) and began investigating whether the vehicle had any connection to the suspect.

Following an investigation and recovery, the NYPD has announced a person of interest in connection with the New York City subway attack. Investigators released a photo of the man and said they are looking for Frank James. Police described the shooter as an “active shooter.” According to police, James rented the van in Philadelphia. Police also announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to his whereabouts. Later, Police Chief Kikante Sewell said at a press conference that they were unsure of the suspect’s motive behind the mass shooting. He said,
At this time, we still don’t know the suspect’s motive. It was clear that this man had boarded the train with the intention of committing violence. “
Consequences and Reactions
President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Attorney General Merrick Garland and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas were briefed on the situation, the White House said in a press statement notification. Later, President Joe Biden said in a statement that he was concerned about those injured in the shooting. He said,
We are grateful to all the first responders…including civilians who did not hesitate to help other passengers. “
FBI officers also assisted investigators at the scene. Later, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul visited the victims who were recovering at Maimonds Hospital.
