The first responder says, “Agent 23. Rescue 23. EMS 9 on the radio. In response to a drowning.”

Matthew, 54 — Chandler Bing in the global hit hit series — was unresponsive when he was found in a hot tub in his garden at 4pm on Saturday.

He was honest about his struggles with drink and drugs and his health problems.

Police have confirmed that the death is under investigation, but there is no doubt that it was foul play.

No narcotics were found at the scene, but authorities found antidepressants, anti-anxiety medication and medication for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

On the morning of his death, Matthew was playing pickleball with a racket with a friend, who revealed the star had been feeling unwell and “tired” for the past week.

The actor was said to be in good spirits while playing at the Riviera Country Club near his home in the Pacific Palisades region of Los Angeles.

He returned home and later sent his assistant on an errand, but he was unresponsive when they returned two hours later.

TV host Billy Bush said: “I spoke to the woman he was playing with this morning, and every morning. He is in shock. She adored Matt.

“She said he was tired today and over the last week. A little more than usual. He played for an hour and went home.”

Members of the Country Club said Matthew was also working out with a friend.

One said: “Yesterday he had a fight with a guy who is famous around here. I spoke to him, he is quite upset.

“As someone who really watched Friends, it was a very cool pop culture moment in history.

“You won’t find anyone here who spoke ill of him.”

Yesterday, Friends fans left flowers on a New York apartment building featured in the show.

The Sun has learned that Matthew lived alone but spent time with assistants and sober society who recently downsized at the multi-million dollar penthouse.

Last weekend he enjoyed a meal at The Apple Pan, a restaurant in LA known for its burgers.

Investigators spent hours at the home seeing Matthew’s family looking distraught when they arrived.

They left a few hours later, and the coroner arrived around 10:35 p.m.

The investigator then left with the body at 1.06am yesterday.

Matthew’s dad John Bennett Perry, 82 – who had a cameo in a 1998 episode of Friends – arrived at the house on Saturday night.

He was joined by the star’s ex-mom Suzanne Morrison (75) and stepfather Keith Morrison (76).

A neighbor who saw the ambulance arrive said: “I was very sad. At the same time, I kind of expected it, but I didn’t expect it to be so soon.

“He didn’t live there for long. I was very broken when I saw what happened. I met him once, he was very friendly, friendlier than I thought.

“A very kind and sincere guy. I’ve always looked up to Matthew and he’s probably one of my favorite actors of all time.

“He made the funniest jokes on the show.

“I just hope his friends and family can come together at this time.”

Perry’s last known relationship was his engagement to Molly Hurwitz, a literary manager for Thruline Entertainment in LA.

He proposed to her in November 2020 after more than a year of dating, but they broke up in June 2021.

Matthew then said: “Sometimes things just don’t work out and this is one of them.”

Yesterday morning, Molly, 32, was seen leaving her home in West Hollywood to walk her dogs and chat with a friend over coffee.

Neighbors said Matthew had spent months renovating his new home and wanted it done quickly.

One said: “The work was loud and lasted for weeks.

“I think he was mad at his contractor because it was taking so long. The noise only stopped about a week ago, and come to think of it, he was hardly enjoying the pool. Now he is gone. It’s incredibly sad.”

In one of his last interviews, Matthew talked about his dream of becoming a husband.

Friends also told The Sun he was desperate to become a dad.

After getting sober in 2021, Matthew said: “I’m not driven by the fear that drove me before so everything is kind of different.

“I feel more confident and I’m not afraid of love anymore, so I better watch out for the next girl I go out with.”

In 2016, he told BBC Radio 2 that because of drinking and drugs, he doesn’t even remember three years of filming Friends.

Two years later, he suffered a gastrointestinal perforation as a result of extreme opiate use.

He had a two percent chance of survival after being in a coma for two weeks.

Matthew detailed his struggles with alcohol and drug addiction in his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.

The book was released after the Friends reunion in 2021, where he returned with his five co-stars – Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer.

Matthew revealed that he once took up to 55 Vicodin painkillers a day during the third season of Friends, and abused the tranquilizers Xanax and OxyContin, also for pain relief.

During the series, the actor said his weight fluctuated “between 128 and 225 pounds,” depending on what addiction he was dealing with — drinking or drugs.

He wrote: “I was 128lbs, I was on Friends which was watched by 30 million people — and that’s why I can’t watch the show because I was brutally thin.

“I had a rule that I would never drink or do drugs while working.

“Because I had too much respect for the five people I worked with. So I was never wasted while working.

“What always makes me cry . . . is that it is not fair.

“It’s not fair that I had to go through this disease, and the other five didn’t.”
