FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass confirmed that Freddy Ramirez suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
“No one else was injured in the shooting. Please be patient as we work to investigate this incident. He is in critical but stable condition.”

Freddy Ramírez was injured after committing suicide on July 23, 2023, during an alleged suicide attempt. He was in his car with his wife, Jody, when he shot himself after pulling over on the side of the road along Interstate 75.

He was rushed to Tampa General Hospital and underwent surgery.

He was in critical but stable condition. Although, the FDLE and FHP are investigating the shooting.

Miami-Dade police said in a written statement:

Freddy and Jody were in Tampa for the Florida Sheriffs Association summer meeting. The meeting began on July 23, 2023 at the JW Marriot Hotel. Freddy and his wife left the conference welcome reception around 6:30 p.m.
They left in front of the hotel where the argument supposedly took place. According to bystanders, Ramírez was seen threatening to commit suicide.
A source told CBS Miami,
“A citizen saw him pull out a gun and put it in his mouth.”
However, the Tampa police decided not to arrest Freddy. The source said,
“There was not enough evidence to do anything.”
Freddy and Jody returned to their room, but according to hotel officials, they were no longer welcome at the Marriott and were asked to leave.
Freddy and his wife, Jody, left the hotel at around 9 p.m. on July 23, 2023, and he was driving back to Miami when he pulled over on the side of the road along I-75 in the Riverview section of Tampa. He then shot her in the head. Sources also said Freedy could lose sight in one eye.
The mayor’s office said,
“Following yesterday’s critical injury in Tampa, Chief Ramirez was hospitalized and is in critical but stable condition. The only thing that matters at this time is the well-being of Chief Ramirez and I join his family, his loved ones, and the entire Miami-Dade Police Department and Miami-Dade County family in praying for his speedy recovery.”
According to a statement from the Miramar Police Department,
“We unite by sending you positive energy and strength,” the agency said in a social media post. “May Director Ramírez find the courage and resilience to overcome this obstacle and may his recovery be quick and complete.”

Freddy Ramirez has been married to Jody Ramirez since 1995. She is his high school sweetheart. This couple has been blessed with four children, including a son named Brandon Ramirez, who is a sergeant with the Miami-Dade Police Department.
Freddy’s full name is Alfredo Ramírez II. He is currently 52 years old. He was appointed Director of the Miami-Dade Police Department on January 13, 2020. He is from Elizabeth, NJ. He graduated from Miami Sunset Senior High School and graduated from the University of Miami with a BA in Sociology in 1995.
