Friends: Who Does Joey End Up With?

What happens when you take a side episode they-won’t-they-will-love, divide it among six people, and stretch it over 10 seasons? Of course, you get “Friends”. This iconic sitcom has been praised for many reasons, but there’s no denying that a major part of its appeal is tracking to find out exactly who ends up with whom at the end of the series. Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Ross (David Schwimmer) find a solution, Chandler (Matthew Perry) ends up dating Monica (Courteney Cox), Phoebe gets married to her lover Mike (Paul Rudd) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) ends up dating ending with ..wait, who will Joey end up with?

If “Friends” fans have trouble remembering who Joey’s primary love interest was at the end of the series, it’s because he doesn’t really have one. Although he engages in many romantic fiends throughout the series, Joey stands out as the only member of the main group who isn’t in a committed relationship as the final episode’s test takes place. This result is not only consistent with the character’s tendency to avoid commitment, but is actually a purposeful creative decision by the show’s team.

Although the writers of “Friends” have experimented with pairing Joey with other characters at various points in the film, that dynamic doesn’t feel natural for the character. For example, one of the show’s later seasons saw a brief romantic spark between Joey and Rachel. In an interview with Vanity Fair, series co-creator David Crane said that the character part has a strange and unnatural meaning. “Matt kept saying, ‘That’s not true. It’s like I want to be with my sister,” he explained. “We said, ‘Yes, that’s completely wrong. That’s why we have to do it’.”

Some fans may find it strange that Joey and Phoebe were never really explored as a romantic couple, as it would neatly tie together each of the main characters from the “Friends” series. In an interview with Metro, Crane said they avoid going down this route because it ultimately seems impractical. “It will all be too neat and too complete,” he said. “When your goal is to keep the six-character story together, it’s very easy to go that route, but I think we all felt it was a mistake.”

While Joey’s single life at the end of “Friends” stayed true to his character and kept the romantic elements of the film from being too contrived, die-hard fans of ” Friends” knows that this isn’t really where Joey’s story ends. Matt LeBlanc turned out to be the only member of the “Friends” cast to film his own spin-off series after the conclusion of the main series. Indeed, the appropriately titled “Joey” series ended with a very different romantic resolution to its male lead.

At the end of that series, Joey finally begins to settle down with his neighbor and new lover Alex (Andrea Andreas). Although the pair weren’t married at the end of the series (it was canceled after just two seasons), the pair have proven to have a deeply committed relationship over a long period of time. Looks like Joey found true love after all – just not on his original show.
