Frontier Airlines Announces That Its Customers Can Now Pay to Have the Seat Next to Them Empty

UpFront Plus upgrades will be available for just $9 for a limited time

Frontier Airlines has a new type of seating option that’s perfect for fliers who like an empty middle seat.

On Tuesday, the airline announced it will launch a new fare tier — called UpFront Plus, a fare type that allows Frontier passengers to pay extra to get a window or aisle seat in the first two rows of the plane with a guaranteed empty middle seat next to it. plus a little extra legroom.

“Many consumers are willing to pay a little more to get extra space and comfort while flying. Our new UpFront Plus option is similar to the approach some European carriers are taking by blocking the middle seat to create a new seat category that provides more room to stretch out, a Frontier spokesperson said in a statement to PEOPLE.

“Frontier is all about choice and giving consumers the flexibility to customize their travel to fit their individual needs and preferences,” Frontier Airlines CEO Barry Biffle said in a press release. “UpFront Plus is an excellent option for those who want extended personal space and additional comfort.”

According to the low-cost carrier, Frontier customers can upgrade their seats to the UpFront Plus level starting Thursday for flights departing on or after April 10. As part of the promotion, upgrades will be available from as little as $49 per passenger for flights between April 10 and April 30 purchased by March 20, the release said.

With extra legroom and elbow room, UpFront Plus ensures that passengers seated in these upgraded seats will be the first to receive service during the flight.

This new fare tier comes amid changes at Frontier — last month the airline announced it would add more than a dozen new routes in the U.S. and the Caribbean, including nonstop flights from Atlanta, Nashville, Denver, Houston and other cities.

In 2022, he also created another new ticket tier — the annual GoWild! The Pass allows users to book flights for one cent plus taxes, fees and charges. The annual pass costs $1,999 per year and allows customers to book domestic flights just one day before departure.
