Further yellow rain warnings are also in place, lower levels meaning there could be disruption.

Hundreds of schools in southern England and the Channel Islands will close today to keep children safe.

Around 51 schools in Southampton, four on the Isle of Wight, 224 in Devon, 22 in Cornwall, 9 in East Sussex and 10 in Dorset will be closed.

All schools in Jersey and a further 30 in Cornwall and two in Dorset will be fully or partially closed.

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said the storm would hit with coastal gusts of 70 to 80 mph and the potential for 85 mph.

And people are being urged not to approach the water’s edge due to “very dangerous conditions”.

An amber warning is in place until 11am in Cornwall and Devon, with the Met Office predicting Storm Ciaran will bring winds of 75 to 85mph, with gusts of 65 to 75mph inland.

Along the South Coast, an amber warning is in effect from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., with winds of 70 to 80 mph expected, with a possibility of 85 mph and large waves.

A red wind warning, the highest level, was issued by Jersey Met from Wednesday night until today, with residents being warned to avoid outdoor activities due to predicted gusts of almost 100mph.

A yellow warning for rain is also in place from Friday until 6am for north-east England and Scotland as far as Inverness.

The Environment Agency is urging people to prepare for “possible significant flooding” in parts of England from Wednesday to Friday, with some significant coastal impacts also possible but not expected on Thursday.

The Environment Agency issued 24 flood warnings for England by 11am yesterday morning, with 116 flood warnings in place.

Due to wind warnings, heavy rain and consequent flooding, many schools closed their doors.
