G. Marimuthu (1967-2023) was an Indian film director and actor, primarily in the Tamil film industry. He is best known for playing the role of Aadhimuthu Gunasekaran in Sun TV’s Tamil drama Ethirneechal (2022). He passed away due to cardiac arrest in Chennai on September 8, 2023, while dubbing for Ethirneechal.

G. Marimuthu was born on Wednesday, July 12, 1967, in Varusanadu village, Theni district, Tamil Nadu, India (age 56 years at time of death). His zodiac sign is Cancer. Marimuthu decided to enter the entertainment industry and watched Ilaiyaraaja (musician), Bharathiraja (director) and Vairamuthu (lyricist) from Theni region develop in Tamil cinema. Thereafter, he worked as an assistant director along with Mani Ratnam, Vasanth, Rajiv Menon and SJ Suryah. He worked with Vasant in the films Nerrukku Ner (1997), Poovellam Kettuppar (1999) and Rhythm (2000). He acted in the film Panchalankurichi (1996) directed by Seeman. He made the films New (2001), Khushi (2003) and Anbe Aaruyire (2005) under the direction of SJ Suryah. Criticized for sexist rhetoric in #MeToo movement
In 2018, G Marimuthu faced huge criticism for his sexist remarks about the #MeToo movement. In an interview, Marimutu supported his long-time collaborator, renowned lyricist Walamutu, who has been accused of harassment by multiple women. A video clip of the controversial interview went viral on the internet, in which he said:
He (Vairamuthu) called a girl to his room. What’s wrong with this? Let him call the girl he likes and let him go to him if the girl likes him too. Otherwise, they go to the media. let them. “
Furthermore, he further strengthened his argument:
Isn’t he a man? Even he has hormones, right? He also has the desire to sleep with women, right? So he approached a woman and that woman told everyone else. Vairamuthu has to face it bravely… After three days, people will forget about it and start discussing other issues. This is what will happen. “
During the interview, he also offended the LGBT community, saying:

G. Marimuthu passed away due to heart attack on September 8, 2023, in Chennai. Film trade analyst and industry insider Ramesh Bala confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter). He fainted around 8.30 am in Chennai while dubbing for the TV serial Ethirneechal. He was rushed to nearby Sooriya Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Facts/Trivia
- G. Marimuthu revealed in an interview that his character in the TV series Ethirneechal was inspired by a true story. Director V. Thiruselvam conceived the character of Aadhimuthu Gunasekaran while traveling in southern Tamil Nadu. There he met a suffering man and narrated his life story to V. Thiruselvam, who transformed it into a character.
- In an interview, Marimuthu talked about the difficulties he encountered at the beginning of his career. He shared that he once survived on just water and pickles for three consecutive days because he did not have enough money to pay for daily necessities. He received financial support from his friends, but they were all out of town at the time for Diwali celebrations. On the fourth day of the kimchi diet, his health deteriorated dramatically and he developed diarrhea. His neighbors found him in a miserable condition and rushed him to a nearby hospital.
