In the true sense of the word, Galen Winsor was a hands-on expert in nuclear technology. He and his colleagues dealt directly with the old fuel before unreasonable radiation protection regulations were introduced. They couldn’t use shield or increase distance because their mission required them to touch radioactive objects. Instead, they limited their exposure time and relied on one of three measures of “time, distance, and shield” that all radiation professionals are taught.

Their report states that Winsor and his colleagues had sufficient knowledge of the substance they were working with to prevent most skin burns, but they had a task to perform and did not let the desire to reduce doses below the level of immediate risk get in the way of their effective execution.

Winsor steadfastly refused to change his behavior during more than 30 years of professional involvement in handling nuclear materials. His personal “jacuzzi” was a pool of spent fuel at a recycling facility in Morris, Illinois. He gave speeches and licked the palm of his hand to remove uranium dioxide, and once filled a two-liter bottle from the spent fuel pool and kept it on his desk so he could drink it every day.

If you pay close attention, you should get the feeling that Winsor wasn’t stupid; he knew exactly how the materials he measured behaved in reality.

Winsor recently passed away. He was 80 years old and the typical natural causes of death for people his age appear to have caused his death.

Winsor emphasizes the physical importance of the material throughout his talk despite the fact that some people still consider it to be high-end garbage. The two most important questions he asks are: “Who owns the plutonium?” and how much is it?” He understands that the proper use of it threatens many powerful interests.

Unfortunately, when Winsor made his presentations in the 1980s, his message didn’t attract much attention. He didn’t use the internet, so he didn’t have access to websites like YouTube and blogs. Fortunately, someone videotaped his presentations and converted them to digital format.
