Ganpat lost his father at a young age and in order to support his family, he started selling and supplying bread to different hotels on his bicycle in 1978. In 1982, he rented a hand press and began producing clips for assembly. TV antenna. In 1985, he bought a second-hand rickshaw and started driving it. Ganpat Gaikwad started his political career in 2009 by contesting the 2009 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections from the Kalyan East constituency. He won the election with 49% of the total vote and became the first MLA for the newly created Kayan East constituency. In 2014, he was re-elected as an independent candidate as a provincial councilor for the East Kayan constituency with a margin of 745 votes.

On February 2, 2024, a case was registered against Ganpat Gaikwad for shooting and injuring politician Mahesh Gaikwad inside a police station over an ongoing land dispute. In a case registered under the SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the landowner alleged that Gaikwad abused and insulted her and her family and made casteist remarks.
Gaikwad fired six shots at Kalyan Shiv Sena leader Mahesh Gaikwad and injured his associate Rahul Patil inside the senior inspector’s cabin at Hill Line police station (Rahul Patil).

After the incident, the general secretary of the Maharashtra BJP said that strict action would be taken against Ganpat Gaikwad; however, in an interview after the incident, Gaikwad claimed that he did so for Protective of his son, and he doesn’t regret his actions at all. He said,
My son was brutally treated inside the police station. They took my land by force. Eknath Shinde is trying to lay down a rule for criminals in Maharashtra. If he continues in office, the Maharashtra Chief Minister will only see the emergence of criminal elements. Today it was Cinder who turned me into a criminal. I was frustrated and that’s why I shot. I don’t have any regrets. What do you expect me to do if my son is beaten in the police station? I had no intention of killing them, but if someone behaves like this in front of the police, then I have to act in self-defense. ”
