Gavin and Stacey ‘returning’ after five years off screens in wake of record-breaking BBC Christmas special

GAVIN and Stacey will return for another Christmas special after a five-year absence, it has been announced.

The final run of the beloved British comedy in 2019 was the most-watched series of the decade and was left on a cliffhanger.

Now Deadline has reported that James Corden and Ruth Jones have been secretly working on a brand new episode.

The industry site says that filming will begin this summer, with most of the main cast likely to return.

Other stars include Matthew Horne and Joanna Page in the lead roles alongside an ensemble cast that includes Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb and Julia Davis.

More than 18 million people watched what was believed to be the sitcom’s final outing, in which Nessa (Jones) proposed to the lovely Smithy (Corden).

But rumors of a reunion grew after James returned home to the UK after ending his eight-year stint on The Late Late Show in the US.

The series is reported to be in development/pre-production and will be produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow, Jones’ Tidy Productions and Fulwell 73, which is co-owned by Corden.

Gavin and Stacey became a surprise hit when it first appeared on the BBC in 2007, becoming BBC Three’s biggest digital hit at the time.

Following huge ratings for the channel, it moved to BBC One, with the third and final full-length series taking center stage as a highlight of BBC One’s 2010 New Year’s programme.

When the series’ final episode ended in 2019, fans were left convinced that another one must be in store as a result of the stunning cliffhanger.

After years of on-and-off romance and seeming to be in denial about their feelings for each other, Nessa finally took the big step and asked Smithy to marry her.

Viewers didn’t know if he said yes or no, but it looks like the big question will FINALLY be answered when the new episode hits screens.

The BBC is understood to be hoping that the show’s return at Christmas will lead to a boost in TV ratings after they failed to replicate the phenomenal success the show achieved in 2019.

Gavin and Stacey’s best moments

With the news that the show is gearing up for an exciting return to screens, let’s take a look at some of the biggest and best moments of the comedy show…

  • Smithy and Rudi’s American Boy rap – No one will ever forget when James Corden and Sheridan Smith perfectly rapped Kanye West and Estelle’s hit American Boy word for word as they walked across the parking lot to Gavin’s phone.
  • Pam’s Vegetarian Fail – Despite her love of cheeseburgers, Pam finds herself caught in a web of unexpected lies when she claims to be a vegetarian. She is forced to keep the secret throughout the show and uses husband Mick to help her mock the meat. She is later shaken when Stacey catches her in the act mocking a ham in the kitchen. Stacey tells her, “Is that ham, Pam!?… “I saw you, Pam. A scotch egg here, a bit of bacon there, I put those regular sausages in the Linda McCartney box”.
  • THAT fishing trip – It remains one of the biggest mysteries in Gavin and Stacey history what exactly happened on the ill-fated fishing trip. Bryn seems to be hiding a secret about an incident between him and his nephew Jason that left a fractured relationship. Nessa’s boyfriend, Dave, is the only other person who knows the whole truth. Bryn seemed to be alluding to him and Jason lying naked together for warmth as he told Dave, “We’re going to throw this out, once and for all, man to man, you may know what happened David, but you don’t know why it happened! It was freezing cold, it was! And when you’re so cold…”
  • Islands in the Stream – No one can ever forget the classic karaoke performance of Islands in the Stream. Nessa and Bryn performed the song in front of all their loved ones. The entire pub was seen dancing as they enjoyed their drunkenness.
  • Christmas Special – 2019 saw fans overjoyed when the series returned, but ended on a high note. Nessa asked Smithy if she would marry him because she finally came clean about her feelings for him. Fans were disappointed as the show then went straight to the exit credits as they never found out how Smithy responded. Will all be revealed in the new episode?
