Despite being part of the nation’s favorite high street, Geoffrey’s character was given a storyline that included a kidnapping and attempted murder – making him one of the most memorable villains.
During his 10 years in Corrie as Don Brennan, he bought MVB engines from Mike Baldwin, but came to resent him when the garage fell into disrepair.
He then kidnapped Mike’s wife Alma and drove their car into a canal – however, they both survived.
Don later tries to run Mike over, but is killed when his car crashes into a viaduct and explodes.
Geoffrey first joined Coronation Street in 1963 but played a variety of characters.
He then appeared in Adam Adamant Lives!, Dixon of Dock Green, UFO, Crown Court, The Professionals and Heartbeat, and also played a wireless operator in A Bridge Too Far.
And in the British police drama The Professionals, he played a sergeant in the episode When The Heat Cools Off.
The Leeds-born actor also starred in comedy TV series Brass and appeared in six episodes of Doctor Who.
Most recently, in 2010, he had a small role in Holby City.
Tributes have been pouring in for Geoffrey ever since.
Helen Worth, who plays Gail Platt, said: “Geoff was a wonderful, quiet man who will be sadly missed by us all.
“His partnership with Lynne Perry was something special and has given viewers great pleasure for years.”
Fans also expressed their condolences on X/Twitter.
One wrote: “Coronation Street legend Geoff Hinsliff, who played Don Brennan, has sadly passed away. RIP.”
Others simply wrote: “RIP Don. RIP”
Geoffrey is survived by his wife Judith and his two daughters Gaby and Sophie.
He married Judith in 1967 in the church of St. Cecilia in Little Hadham, East Hertfordshire.
It is not yet known how Geoffrey died.
