Ghost Rider Cosplay Is the Fan Redesign Marvel’s Darkest Hero Deserves

A stunning new Ghost Rider cosplay is the fan redesign Marvel’s darkest hero needs. Cosplayer Whitney Wright, who goes by the handle W_dubb on Instagram, has created an epic and awe-inspiring new vision of Ghost Rider, reimagining the Spirit of Vengeance’s flames as flowing hair.

W_dubb unveiled the cosplay shoot in an Instagram post. Using a mixture of practical and digital effects, the photo shows a Spirit of Vengeance standing in front of a brick wall, holding a flaming chain; she is wearing the character’s typical biker get-up, but with a skull head missing its lower jaw. Perhaps the coolest touch of W_dubb’s cosplay shoot is her long, fiery hair, which reimagines the hero’s iconic flaming skull. W_dubb prefaced the cosplay shoot by saying it was for the annual anime convention Katsucon and that, alongside the Punisher, Ghost Rider is one of her favorite characters.

A New Ghost Rider With a Different Look

Over the past 50 years, Marvel has expanded Ghost Rider’s mythology, taking him from just another supernatural character to a premier legacy heroes, with Ghost Riders stretching back to Earth’s prehistoric era. While Johnny Blaze may be the Ghost Rider best known to fans, a number of other Spirits of Vengeance have headlined books of their own, including Danny Ketch, Robbie Reyes (who was recently revealed to be the multiversal “All-Rider”) and most recently, Spirit Rider, who is not only a Spirit of Vengeance, but also a Sorcerer Supreme! There have even been Ghost Riders in the Wild West, and the X-Men have a Ghost Rider of their own: Vox Ignis. Now, W_dubb’s cosplay introduces fans to a new Ghost Rider, one who will continue the dark legacy of her predecessors.

There Has Always Been a Ghost Rider

Johnny Blaze as the Ghost Rider in Marvel Comics.

W_dubb’s cosplay impresses on several levels. First, her costume is sleek and streamlined, perfect for traveling at high speeds on a flaming motorcycle. The outfit is all-leather and all-black – two of Ghost Rider’s trademarks, as is the requisite flaming chain. Finally, the fiery hair seals the deal, turning what may initially seem like an unchangeable aspect of the character – the image of a flaming skull – into something new. W_dubb’s Ghost Rider is the perfect addition to the legacy of the Spirit of Vengeance.

Ghost Rider has evolved over the years, from a demon-possessed stunt cyclist to a Marvel institution. Ghost Rider has inspired generations of creators and cosplayers, each adding to the mythos, and over time, he has become one of the publisher’s most unlikely legacy heroes. There have been many different Ghost Riders over the years, in all shapes and sizes with all manners of rides, and W_dubb’s interpretation can run with the best of them. Intimidating and brutal, Ghost Rider gets the fan redesign that the Spirit of Vengeance deserves.
