Gilles Deacon was born in Darlington, England, in 1969 (54 years old in 2023) and grew up in Ullswater, Lake District. He completed his education at Barnard Castle School in County Durham. After failing his chemistry A-level in order to become a marine biologist, he studied an art foundation course at Harrogate School of Art. He later completed his formal education at St Martin’s College of Art in London.

As a designer and entrepreneur
After graduating in 1992, he collaborated with his friend Fi Doran to create the “Doran Deacon” brand, and also contributed illustrations to the British fashion magazine Dazed & Confused. He collaborates with famous designers such as Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Bottega Veneta and Tom Ford. Later, he obtained a loan to create his own brand, GILES, which he launched in 2003. His first collection, designed by his friend Katie Grand, debuted at London Fashion Week in February 2004. In April 2010, he was appointed creative director of French fashion brand Ungaro. Deacon launched his first collection for Ungaro in October 2010 to much anticipation. However, he ended his association with the brand in 2011. In 2016, Deacon launched his first couture collection.

As a judge, Deacon competed on Britain’s Next Top Model in 2010. He also took part in the Channel 4 entertainment series New Look Style the Nation, which started in June 2011.
Jewelry series
Deacon works with companies including Sky, Converse and Evoke. His collaboration with Evoke also led to the development of his first jewelry collection in 2008.

- Giles began drawing at the age of three, often finding inspiration in nature in the mountains. His paintings have been called “interesting little garden paintings.”
- As a child, Giles’ love of animals and insects led him to dream of becoming a zookeeper or marine biologist, although he failed the relevant exams.
- Giles designed American actor Billy Porter’s 2020 Oscars outfit.
- Giles’ notable collaborations include that with fashion chain New Look. He launched his own line, Gold by Giles, in March 2007, starring actress Drew Barrymore in the initial advertising campaign. Subsequently, British model Agyness Deyn became the main spokesperson for Giles’ fourth series.
- At the end of 2015, Giles created a women’s clothing series for Debenhams, with Daisy Lowe as the model, and named it Giles Deacon’s Edition.
- Giles was responsible for the dress worn by Cate Blanchett at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, which was voted the best dress of the festival that year and the second best dress of all time, after By Grace Kelly.
