Girija Shankar is an Indian actor and producer. He is best known for his role as Dhritarashtra in the epic Indian television series Mahabharata.

Girija Shankar was born in 1960 (59 years old in 2019) in Patiala, Punjab. Shankar wanted to join the Air Force since he was a child. He even gave the entrance exam but failed due to his age (minor). He graduated from Punjab University, Patiala and then went to Delhi to study at the National School of Drama. Girija passed the entrance audition but was not admitted to the academy due to some personal reasons. After this, he started studying acting at an acting academy in Patiala. During this time, he met Harpal Tivana and performed plays there for about 5 years. He then moved to Delhi and then to Mumbai to practice drama. In Mumbai, he performed plays with many big names in the acting industry.

Girija Shankar began his acting career as ‘Dhritrashtra’ in the Indian epic television series Mahabharata in 1988. His portrayal of the character in the show earned him immense popularity and he went on to act in many Hindi, Punjabi and Tamil films including Daata (1989), Maut Ki Sazaa (1991), Kal Ki Awaaz (1992), Mr. Azad (1994), Tum Se Achcha Kaun Hai (2002), Khwaab (2004) and Baghi (2006).
Girija has also acted in several Hollywood films. In 2006, he made his directorial debut with the British film “Banana Brothers”. The film tells the story of two young men who go to San Francisco with dreams of making a fortune and living a high life, and eventually overcome many difficulties and obstacles to achieve their dreams. He has also acted in the popular TV series “Buniyaad” and “Charchit”.
