He was reportedly walking his dog when he was attacked in Franklin Park around 6.30pm on Sunday night.

It is assumed that he was severely attacked near the entrance to the park by a group of young people who then fled the scene.

The man was hit in the neck and spine and was left screaming in pain, his daughter said.

The group left the scene before emergency services arrived and took the man to hospital, where he died.

The police arrested a 14-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy and two girls on suspicion of murder.

The five children are currently being interviewed by police investigating the man’s death.

Before he died, the man’s daughter told the Leicester Mercury: “He took the dog for a walk.

“They pushed him, hit him in the neck, in the spine.

“He was about 30 seconds from coming home. He’s always been very active – he’s got three lots. We’ve lived here for 40 years.”

The neighbor said: “I heard a commotion outside and he was lying in the park, screaming in pain. He said he had been pushed violently.”

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who was in the park or in the Bramble Way area between 6pm and 6.45pm on Sunday night.

They said the 80-year-old man was believed to be wearing a black jumper and gray jogging bottoms.

Leicestershire Police referred the IOPC watchdog to “previous contact” between officers and the victim.

Detective Inspector Emma Matts said: “Unfortunately, following the death of the victim last night, this has now become a homicide investigation.

“Police officers are continuing their accelerated work to determine the details of the attack.

“We have made a number of arrests as we continue to understand what happened.

“We still need people who were in the area to come forward if they saw anything or have any information that could help.

“Were you in the Franklin Park or Bramble Way area around 6.30pm on Sunday night? Did you see the attack itself?

“According to the given description, did you see the victim before the incident or perhaps a group of young people who left the area afterwards?

“Scene protection will remain in place at the park while our investigation continues.

“Local officers are also in the area carrying out reassurance patrols and can speak to anyone in the local community who has concerns.”
