The band – who paid tribute to the late Sarah Harding on their tour – have proved a huge hit with fans as they hit the road.

But last night poor Cheryl was nearly pulled off the stage by an overzealous fan.

A security guard saved the shocked singer from falling off the stage.

An over-enthusiastic audience member appears to have nearly dragged her off the runway at Girls Aloud center stage at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena.

As fans went wild for the band during their set, things almost went wrong for poor Cheryl.

It happened while she was extending her hand to fans in one of the VIP boxes right in front of the stage, and they, it seems, went a little too far.

Luckily, security swooped in and stopped her from falling.

Fans at the show were quick to tweet about it, with one saying: “Some guy tried to pull Cheryl off the stage during Girls Aloud in Newcastle tonight.”

A MOVING CALL

Girls Aloud kicked off their comeback tour last month.

At their opening show in Dublin, they brought fans to tears as they sang a duet with their late bandmate Sarah from beyond the grave.

During the show, they mentioned her several times and showed her footage on the huge screens behind the stage.

It was their first performance since she passed away after a battle with cancer in 2021.

For an encore, they sang their 2008 single The Promise, with Sarah singing her verse.

But their cover of the Pretenders hit I’ll Stand By You, with which they were no. 1 in 2004, she made fans cry.

Nadine explained: “This next one we’re going to do is actually a duet. We were thinking about things we could do and this song we’re going to perform, Sarah sings the whole song.

“So tonight we’re going to do a duet with Sarah. We’ll be Sarah, we’ll be us, and we’ll be you. Let’s all do this together.”

One fan tweeted: “So many beautiful moments for Sarah tonight. crying eyes still. I can’t believe I’ve just seen Girls Aloud at the premiere in Dublin.”

Another wrote: “I’m honestly crying. We miss you Sarah #GirlsAloud.”

Nicola gave a tearful introduction to Whole Lotta History, while the song ended with a black and white shot of Sarah walking along the River Thames singing the song.

She said: “When we recorded this next song in 2005 for our Chemistry record, 19 years ago, we all loved that song, it was very special to us, but we had no idea that 19 years later it would become so moving to our journey.”

At the end of that performance, a message appeared on the screens: “The darkest nights give birth to the brightest stars.”

One of our main goals on this tour is to do Sarah justice and give us and our fans a moment to celebrate her.

Kimberley Walsh

The Noughties girl group said they are embarking on their reunion tour to show their children what they became famous for.

Cheryl, Nadine and Kimberley have five children and they all can’t wait for the performances.

‘Bring back memories’

Recalling the time when their late bandmate Sarah, Cheryl said: “Sarah stayed with me for about a week and was throwing ideas around so we could celebrate 20 years of Girls Aloud while she was still here.

“At one point she told us, ‘Even if I can’t make it, I hope you girls can make it without me’.”

Kimberley added: “One of our main goals on this tour is to do Sarah justice and give us and our fans a moment to celebrate her.

“I think they need it — I think we all need it.”

Cheryl said: “I think one of our driving forces is that our kids will see us on stage and think we’re actually cool.

“They will see Mammy on stage!”

Girls Aloud, who broke up in 2013 after a staggering 21 top ten hits, including their first Sound Of the Underground, have been rehearsing for five weeks to prepare for the tour.

The tour continues across the UK until the end of the month before they headline Brighton Pride in August.
