In 1971, Gitanjali Aiyar joined Doordarshan and rose to become one of the first female English-language news anchors. For more than 30 years, she delivered news on the national channel, earning four wins for best anchor. She has served as host of well-liked programmes like Khandaan and A Date With You. She was renowned for her presentational manner and warm, smooth voice.
Additionally, Gitanjali Aiyar worked as a journalist, anchor, and businesswoman. She worked as the Head of Major Donors for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Additionally, she served as a consultant for corporate communications, government relations, and marketing as well as the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Son and two daughters are Gitanjali Aiyar’s surviving family members. On June 8, 2023, her funeral service took place in the Delhi cremation on Lodhi Road.
