Timeline of the relationship between Gloria Estefan and Emilio Estefan

The couple – who are parents to son Nayib and daughter Emily – first met while gigging with mutual friends during the spring after Gloria graduated from high school.

The duo initially kept their relationship platonic and decided to start playing in a wedding band rather than start a romance. “We definitely had chemistry. But he had an older girlfriend and he was my boss,” Gloria told PEOPLE in March 2017.

Things quickly turned romantic for the couple when Emilio asked Gloria to go see him Young Frankenstein for their first date. She told PEOPLE she was sold by the end of the night, explaining, “I knew I was going to marry this man.”

Three years after meeting, the couple got married. “I always felt we were meant to be together,” Glorida told AARP in 2013, recalling the special day.

Gloria Estefan said she loves her husband Emilio ‘more than ever’ at the Songwriters Hall of Fame reception

Back in June, Gloria became the first Latina woman to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York, where she celebrated her family, including her husband, with her speech.

“After 48 years together, I love you more deeply than when we began this crazy, exciting, surprising and often scary epic life together,” Gloria said during the ceremony, which took place at the New York Marriott Marquis.

“Emilio, if it weren’t for you, who knows if I would ever have started down this path. I remember you dropped me off one night after rehearsal—we weren’t even dating—and told me you wanted to record an original album for the band. And you were wondering if I wrote songs,” added the Grammy winner before recalling that she told Emilio that she believed she could because she had written poetry and parodies before.

“So I did, and I’ve recorded every song I’ve written since his wonderfully convincing call. Thank you, honey, so much,” Gloria continued.
