Gordon Cormier Prepares to Battle Daniel Dae Kim in Fiery First Trailer for Avatar: The Last Airbender

Can a reluctant diminutive hero take on the world’s most fearsome ruler?

That’s the challenge at the heart of Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender. Based on the beloved comics of the same name, the new fantasy series follows the adventures of Aang (Gordon Cormier) and his two friends Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) as they learn more about their elemental powers during their adventures and prepare to face off against the Fire Lord Ozai ( Daniel Dae Kim), the ruthless leader of the Fire Nation.

The series’ first trailer opens with a fleet of Fire Nation ships hurtling through choppy waters before cutting to a distant shot of Aang’s six-legged flying bison Appa hovering above the trees.

“The Fire Nation has gone down a dark path, and the world may never recover,” says the narrator. “The world needs an avatar. Need you, Aang.”

In the next scene, Aang, frozen in an iceberg, finally emerges from his 100-year slumber, as Katara and Sokka look on.

“The Fire Nation destroyed everything in our path,” Katara explains, as the trailer cuts to Fire Lord Ozai and his two children, Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) and Azula (Elizabeth Yu). “If the world is going to have any chance, it’s going to need Aang.”

“Right. Out goes the savior of the world,” Sokka jokes.

Back in the Arctic, Prince Zuko declares to his uncle Iroh that he is horrified at capturing Aang.

“I’ve checked every trace of the avatar,” he says, referring to the mischievous hero. “That’s my destiny.”

While the trailer showcases the powers of Fire Lord Ozai, who shoots a massive amount of fire at his opponent in a one-on-one duel, Aang expresses doubt about his abilities.

“I am not someone who can stop the Fire Nation. I don’t want responsibility,” he says.

“You don’t have to do this alone,” Sokka says. “You have me, Katara, and a flying ball of fur. What else do you need?”

As the next few short scenes show the conflict between the Fire Nation soldiers and the villagers, the narrator continues with his advice to Aang.

“The world needs you, Aang,” he adds. “Remember what we are really fighting for. The ones we love.”

In the middle of a scene where Aang dramatically uses his wind powers to take down a group of soldiers on a bridge, Aang declares, “I am the Avatar and I will save the world – with my friends.”

As an all-out crescendo of orchestral music, the trailer cuts to the conflicts throughout the show’s first season, including Aang’s showdown with an old friend, King Bumi (Utkarsh Ambudkar).

In the final moments of the trailer, Aang, filled with energy, rises from the ground — a hint of the power he will wield in the coming seasons — before cutting into the title of the TV series.
