Gordon Ramsay Wasn’t in the Delivery Room When His 4 Older Children Were Born. Why Wife Tana Says ‘It Just Felt Right’

Tana Ramsay talks about the “very controversial” decision her husband Gordon Ramsay made during her pregnancy.

Gordon, 57, and Tana, 50, have six children – Megan, 26, twins Jack and Holly, 24, Matilda “Tilly”, 22, Oscar, 5, and Jesse, 9 months. Tana revealed that Gordon was not in the delivery room when the four oldest were born — and she is “happy” with their choice.

During the episode Happy mom Happy baby podcast, she said it was “just good” that Gordon was out.

“He would get all squeamish and probably pass out and all the attention would be on him and this is my moment,” Tana told host Giovanni Fletcher. “It never really bothered me and I actually felt quite happy when we talked about it.”

She recalls their conversation about the decision: “I said, ‘Look, if you don’t want to be there, don’t be there.’

Tana said her mom was in the room while she was in labor.

While he excused himself from the first four births, Gordon was present when Tana gave birth to their two youngest children, Oscar and Jesse.

“I don’t know what has changed; he just wanted to be there. I felt it would be nice – she continued Happy mom Happy baby.

In 2016, Tana suffered a miscarriage at 20 weeks with their son, whom they named Rocky. The loss may have influenced Gordon’s decision to be in the delivery room for Oscar and Jesse.

“I think it was after what we went through when we lost Rocky, our little boy,” Tana added.

During a cover story for PEOPLE in September, Ramsay talked about their grief, but also how strong the family is today.

“We wouldn’t have an Oscar if we hadn’t lost Rocky,” he said at the time. “There was no replacement – far from it – but he brought us a connection that you would never experience in a normal situation.”

The couple underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) for all their pregnancies except Tilly, who Tana said was their only “surprise”.

In May, Gordon spoke to PEOPLE about how he and Tana are “better” parents later in life than they were in the beginning.

“I think I’m a better dad this time, to be honest,” Ramsay told PEOPLE. “I know I’m better because now I have experience and I think we’ve done a good job with the top four so far.”

“And the other part of this family, with the other two little ones, I think they’re in a great position because they’re getting an education much earlier than their bigger, older siblings, and they’re fascinated by their careers.”
