McTavish’s family moved away from Glasgow when he was a child, and he lived in Canada, the United States, and England before settling in New Zealand. During school, he and a friend would write and perform comedy sketches, which led to his drama teacher asking him to step in to cover a role in Sheridan’s The Rivals after the principal actor became ill. He went on to the Queen Mary University of London, where he earned a degree in English literature. This degree program allowed him to perform in three Shakespeare plays per year while still in school, and it resulted in McTavish earning his Equity card after appearing in a Samuel Beckett play.
